Shocked by GT3 RS 4.0!!
Discussion
Gents, didn't get behind the wheel of it but have been taken for a hoon in it - so passenger experience only:
Want to know what shocked me most? THE BLOODY RIDE COMFORT!
I could not believe just how comfortable and pliant the electronic dampers make that car. The new generation 997RSs really are everyday cars now. This, the most focussed of the lot, just smothered bumps and lumps and potholes and man-hole covers, no worse than an old saloon. I really was completely flabbergasted.
I didn't get the chance to go for a burn so can't comment on just how great the car (probably) is.
Having said that, not sure I liked how it "felt" (compliance meant it didn't FEEL focussed) but that's probably just stupidity on my part (I commuted, amongst other things, almost daily in a 996RS). At the end of the day if you can get all the control and response without having your fillings rattled out then why not?
Seriously though, if you can live with the mad looks and cage, you can use it everyday in town.
Interesting no?

GT3 RS 4.0 is actually fine at any speed and utterly brimming with feel on track. It also sounds way better than a GTR and has a far greater sense of occasion. If you can live with the outrageous spoiler, big price and naff ground clearance, it's utterly fantastic. If I had the means, it would be in the garage!

The relative economic factors (cost/risk/depreciation) can also be taken into account.
Mind you, I would love a 4.0RS on principle alone! I think the economic factors are also favouable.

Don't get the GTR comment. Even in regular mode I found the spring rates pretty hard with stuiff damping and very little travel. I certainly wouldn't call it compliant. An Evora is a like a magic carpet made out of a billion mosquito wings in comparison.

No it doesn't -GTR is an awesome car but is pretty uncomfortable below about 50mph. After this, it's ok and a rocket ship. But if you like holding a road licence, it's best avoided!

So worth 4 times the price then for what appears to be a very subjective opinion..a Porsche(especially RS) is supposed to be a challenge to drive not a shopping car that goes fast with all bells and whistles to make the journey more comfortable, safer in the wet, great in London traffic and the wife loves driving it..have you come to the conclusion yet there is more than one reason why older more 'agricultural' 911's are sought after while the modern 'computer ' aided ones get hammered in price?Personally i think that Porsche(VW)with their desire to make 911's 'easier' to drive dilute the product to their much cheaper rivals.Gtr at a qtr of the price of an rs with Porsche happy to try and 'compete' technically to make their car easy to drive instead of going their own way is poor imo.GT3 RS 4.0 is actually fine at any speed and utterly brimming with feel on track. RS4.0 is challenging to drive fast. It's not a get-in and rag the tits off it kind of car. However, it just happens to be pleasant to drive at normal road speeds. It would not be great in traffic, as the clutch is still quite heavy and it's still a manual. My wife would hate driving it because of the bucket seats but it's not uncomfortable for driver or passenger on the road at normal speeds. GTR is pretty spectacularly uncomfortable when driven slowly. I still think its a great car and great value for money in performance terms but a GTR and a GT3RS 4.0 are aimed at different audiences IMHO. The more natural competitor to the GTR from the Porsche range is a 911 Turbo with PDK.
Having said that the noise, feel, exclusivity and drive make the GT3RS4.0 worth a lot more than a GTR to me.

Let's face it, once you're in that rareified sector of being able to afford £150K plus, do you really care that there are several cheaper cars out there?
I'm not in the same league, but when I decided I wanted a 997 GT3 - I could well have had a brand new GTR for similar money - or a new M3 for a lot less - but neither even entered my head!

Value is very subjective and I would suggest that anyone who bought a 4.0 RS wouldn't even look twice at a GTR!

I appreciate that..but people are quoting the 4.0 rs as much more driveable/usable etc and i think that is missing the point..i think that is attempting to match the challenge laid down by the like of Nissan with their computer wizadry..Porsches are supposed to be a challenge to drive imo..every new model Porsche seem to bring out now is becoming more designed for the 'everyday' user .Let's face it, once you're in that rareified sector of being able to afford £150K plus, do you really care that there are several cheaper cars out there?

Ok - I agree with you on that bit!
Isn't the GTR about £80k these days?
Anyway, GT3 is still a road car, so the fact that it is nice enough to drive slowly on the road just means you're more likely to use it.
It's currently still a manual, so isn't simply a go-faster tech fest and it does demand a lot from the driver to really push it. No it won't kick you in the balls if you make a mistake but by and large that's a good thing IMHO.

£74,480 and I was quoted a couple of grand off for taking a black one out of stock!Anyway, GT3 is still a road car, so the fact that it is nice enough to drive slowly on the road just means you're more likely to use it.

I agree - enough - but not too much!

kayc as much as I may believe in your philosophy. Porsche's aim is to sell more 911's. Making them more user friendly and still a performance contender allows them to appeal to a far wider audience. They may spout about the heritage of the 911, the greatest sports car of all time, the DNA and that is just good pr.
