Am selling my turbo II and have recieved enquires from abroad and in particular from Thailand. The buyer seems very genuine and wants to buy via his friend in London. Anyone have any thoughts on whether this is in any way suspicious or any other thoughts on selling a porker overseas.

Sold my Turbo to a guy in HK.
Simple you don't release car until you have full funds in the bank.

Makes perfect sense and is how I figured, thanks. Certainly sounds like a genuine guy so I guess I'll see how it goes

Sold my last car to a guy going to Australia which was checked by different australian!

Again funds have to fully clear before releasing car. Even for cash on my Evo, it was checked and cleared by the bank before I released the car! Additionally make sure v5 and knocked up doc for vehicle accepted and received are properly signed off. Latter is recommended by autotrader etc and not really necessary but at least you are covered.

Good luck - hope it works out!

Thanks for the reminder on the v5. Definitely waiting for cleared cash seems to be the only way to go.

they are some genuine overseas buyers out there indeed:
- my 997.1 GT3RS was sold to an Australian chap (whether the car is still in the UK or has left to Australia i dont know)
- my 360 modena went to Australia

Buyers HK and Australia I can understand however, the import duty on second hand prestige cars in Thailand is huge and therefore less likely.

Hello,

I myself bought and - after having lived in the UK for two years - imported a 987S to Thailand.

We paid 318% tax for the car, and if it is a used car the owner must have had the car in the UK for at least one year and six months before the it becomes eligible to be imported into the country.

What triggered your suspicion?

The scam/trick is providing the seller has owned the car for two or so years, the v5 sell section is back dated by 12-18 months, therefore avoiding the import duty, since the buyer appears to owned the vehicle for 12+ months. Not sure what dvla makes of this so not totally convinced this scam works....

I bought a 911 carrera, Lotus esprit turbo and TVR Chimera within the last few months from the UK and I have done it all from Australia. Some of us are totally genuine. The recession makes cars very appealing to overseas buyers as well as the currency rates.

Example, I purchased my 911 for 9400 gbp, add $7000 shipping and taxes. Total dollar expendititure is $20,000. Valued upon arrival at $45,000.

The UK is going to lose alot of exotic sports cars over next few years. prices will rise.

You have to understand the culture of the people who can afford such luxuries and the people who cannot....Its a different world in Asia. If you can afford then you buy and you flaunt it, big time and you make sure that everyone else knows that your have the money not only to buy but to import it too. Why do they buy them? Because they can...thats basically it.
