Currently looking for a replacement car, and i've always liked the Sport version of the Cayman. I like Alcantara stuff
Also tried an R but can't help thinking £45-50k is a lot compared to a Sport.
Is it that much better given the cost difference? I've driven an R and the engine is very nice, but not tried a Gen 1 to compare it to. I imagine the spare change could make a few nice tweaks too.
Other issue is i've not seen a white Sport for sale for a long time
Anyone seen one?!

Anyone seen one?!My only caveat would be the potential engine issues of the Gen 1 Cayman. The Gen 1 Caymans getting close to running out of the warranty period so the risks and potential costs are increasing if it goes bang. I would suggest looking at an early Gen 2 with the (so far) bullet-proof engine. You might find a 2009 car for similar money to Gen 1 Cayman Sport.

I though LSD and buckets were an option on both Gen 1 CS and Gen 2 CR?
The LSD wasn't available on the Gen 1 Cayman at all.Yes the carbon buckets were an option on the Gen 1, if you wanted to stump up over £3,000 - they're standard spec on the R.
As mentioned, the Gen 1 non-DFI engine can suffer from problems, most notably oil starvation during heavy track use. This was fixed in the DFI engines, but probably isn't an issue on a Gen 1 unless you're pulling serious Gs, running semi-slicks. I ran a 997 C2S for three years and tracked it regularly without any issues.
You are getting around 25bhp more power with the Cayman R, which coupled with the reduced weight does make a noticeable difference, especially since, as mentioned above, the engine revs more freely too.
Then there's the bespoke suspension setup on the R, which is considerably better than the PASM in the Gen 1 car, and one of the main reasons that the Cayman R and Boxster Spyder drive so well.
There's also the aluminium doors, which aren't an option on any other Cayman, 911 or Boxster. You get them as standard only on GT and Turbo models, as well as the Spyder and R of course.
There's the aero-kit on the R which is another £3,000 option, although it's a bit of a Marmite situation - you either love it or hate it. It does, however make the car more stable at high speed, but you'd have to be seriously going some to get the full benefit!
Then there's the cosmetic stuff, like the red seat belts, colour coded centre console, the red door pulls etc.
Obviously the weight saving on the R is only really applicable as long as you don't put it all back in again by ticking the extensive options list

The best thing about the Cayman S Sport is the option of Viper Green and RS Orange paint for free, but other than that, it's a well specced Gen 1 Cayman S.
a man after my own heart
unfortunately i succumbed to heavy CDR-30, AC and Bi-xenons.......
which I took out a bit with the LiON battery. Still it's porky.
but I can attest to the balance, stability and fluidity of the CR on track.. it is such a sweet car and surprisingly, the standard brakes are up to hard track use for 20 min sessions (brands). I think the CS sport is a paint work special as well and although you can get alcantara speced on the steering wheel for £80. At the end of the day, alcantara on the steering wheel is a bit of marmite good to look at, pain to maintain......... and if it wears... yikes.. Wish I didn't spec it really.
still in all, i dun think you can lose with either car. Interestingly, when i bought my CR, there was a viper green CR for sale but it was snapped up pretty quickly. anyways, for the money, i would go for a CS sport (but only if you want orange or green) otherwise a gen 2 cayman S is better.

I have found this link most useful
http://caymanregister.org/faq.php?faq=models#faq_c...
If you scroll up and down you can see the full history of the Cayman models and all the differences.
I suspect driven in isolation, the Gen1 S Sport will give you probably similar enjoyment levels as the R.
If you can get one through OPC then you will also have 2 years peace of mind re. any warranty issues so if you are finding it difficult to justify the extra cost of an R, then I'm sure the Sport is a great alternative.
All said and done, have you considered an early Gen 2 Cayman S which I assume may go for similar £ as the Gen1 Sport?

Four years into my Gen 1 S, still love it. Probably worth about 18k, genuinely a bargain. Had an R and a gen 2 S for a while, but my S has a Remus and lots of toys that the R didn't. Bragging rights go to the chap with the £45k R, but he's having 5% more fun!?!? I'd happily run mine into the ground.
One here in Orange, http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/4173665.htm I like these especially in Orange, they brought them out when I worked for the RAC, I always wished I could persuade RAC HQ in to funding a rapid response vehicle for me instead of the transit lol.
