Any way to make a 996TT louder without changing exhuast?
Discussion
Remove the soundprooing (and the carpet if you want to go further) from the back of the car, behind the rear seats. Seriously, although it won't make a jot of difference outside, a friend did that to his c4s and it made it somewhat more noisy and racecar like on the inside, at no cost. Is that what you're looking for?

It really needs more noise inside and out but if I had to chose between the two its noise inside I need so removing the soundproofing would be an option but I'd rather look at other avenues if there are any?dibblecorse said:
Drive everywhere one gear lower than normal !!!
Heh, still wouldn't sound loud enough.I appreciate the usability of the 996TT but really, a car like that definitely needs to be making more noise. With a helmet on and a track in front me its just not the same experience without the noise.
There's 2 option I can suggest.
1. Remove the exhaust tips and you'll have better access to the combined pipe that comes from the cat, into the silencer and returns to the tip. Take a drill with a 'core' bit and insert down the end of the pipe and drill a hole through, meaning some of the noise and gases will exit before going into the silencer. Start off with a small hole, say 25mm dia and enlarge if you want a bit more noise.
2. Remove the exhaust and split open the 2 silencer boxes, remove the baffle wadding, weld up and refit. This gives you a fantastic noise and you really hear the turbos spinning up. Downside to this is quite a bit of drone / resonance in the cabin at cruising speeds. I know this as I had it done but if you can live with it it is a great mod noise wise.
If you fancy option 2 but can't be bothered with the hassle of doing it I can sell you mine that's had it done. With regard to option one, this is a popular mod in the USA and I found out about it on another forum but can't remember which one.

I can most likely live with a drone at cruising speed as long as all hell breaks loose when I mash the loud pedal

I can vouch for the noise on this one! Could hear Leigh coming far enough away to know when to put the kettle and bacon butties on and have them ready by the time he pulled in!! 2. I do miss your butties

Carnewal will sell you a set of RSR mufflers for 400 Euros (including shipping or fitting) on exchange. They are standard mufflers that have had some internal tinkering to make them sound louder. Heard them on a mates 987 Boxster S and they sounded great so have been considering a set for my 997 C2S.
They have 996 before and after sound clips here:
