So I thought I'd do an experiment, I filled my Boxster up with Sainsbury standard unleaded and travelled to work for the last three weeks (I only use it three days a week) so two cold starts a day travel through town about 2 miles then 14 miles isn dual carriageway and about 1 mile through town same in reverse on the way home, I didn't use Sport or Sport + left the roof up, left it in auto but drove it normally, its the base 2.9 and heres what I got:-

Quite impressed

I used to average 36 in mine, even saw 42 on a long run. My 991 only averages 27 now, reaching 36 on a run. Therefore it CAN be done. Happy days.

Except you have believed the car system.....
The ONLY way is to brim from the SAME pump to the SAME click )one or two) and do the sums. Car computer is at least 4/5 mpg optimistic.
Having said that i have seen a genuine 33.

You're simply not trying hard enough, that's far too economical!

Seriously, I was very surprised to learn I can get over 31mpg out of a 997tt on a gentle run home on A roads, I could never get more than 25 out of a 996 C4S. I then ruined it all by having a little hoon around the lanes near to my house and dropped it down to 21... which was much more fun :-)

These engines are an amazing feat of engineering. The emissions on the 991 and 981 are also staggeringly low (I'm very jealous, having to fork out nearly £500 a year now). Impressive stuff.

16.5 mpg yesterday, 50 miles cross country to Donington, 120 on track then 50 home. More like it!

Get mine down to 15 giving it some.
Averaged 30mpg on the way to a show recently
996 GT2.

Used to get 15-19mpg in the 930 taking it steady, less than 10 giving it some.
Very primitive fueling, primitive car really.

Hmmm, after three weeks of my little 'i wonder' experiment, refilled top down sport chrono + PSE on and back to the paddles 36 mile just for fun drive now showing 19.6mpg.

But hey at least you have the choice, now should I place that 981 order, I don't know this one is really very good, I'm resisting the extended test drive offer because that'll only end up one way. Will the will power hold out !

To be truthfully honest I've driven the 991 and I just love it so much and after the years of listening to the p*** takers, they'd be right I'd only be buying the 981 because I can't sensibly afford the 991.

on Friday, I had to be in Surrey at 9am, got up at 4am, left at 5am and decided to also do an experiment, apart from the first 5 and last 2 miles - cruise control and speed limits all the way - so thats A303 from Sparkford all the way onto the M3 to J11 of the M25 sticking totally to the speed limits - unbelievably I managed it AND 38 mpg at an average of 57mph for 124 miles in 2 hours 13 mins!

Usually my average lately is around 29 mpg!

Will post up a pic tomorrow lol

A euro-hoon (including the autobahns and a Ring visit) early this year in our 3.4 Cayman saw us average 55 MPH at 24 MPG over 3559 miles, which I thought was pretty good.

There can be no doubt that these are pretty impressive figures when the average 2.0 petrol saloon stuggles to maintain 35mpg.

But 3 weeks of economy driving in a Boxster? This is time you cannot get back. scratchchin

Well there's a longer story but basically I have a friend with a Jag who gets appauling mpg and he came out with me and I think my car was showing 27 odd and he said that's not bad is it and I said well if I keep it in auto and no sport + I can get 35mpg. He said no way and so the gauntlet was laid down with some basic rules and I almost did it !
