The Sports Exhaust Experience #2
Discussion
Back from the trip to Normandy (see post of Friday) and am seriously happy. Pulling away from the peage was reminiscent of my Fezzer - absolutely fantastic. Pull off the gas and hear the popping and crackling like an old turbo. The ONLY disappointing thing is the system switching to quiet mode between 30 and 45mph, but hold it in second and enjoy the roar as the system kicks in again! French roads seem to be designed for Porsches - flat 45 degree bends to be taken at full throttle. I recommend everyone who wants to enjoy their Porsche to get over there. Also the Becker Traffic Pro was excellent - it means I can let something else deal with the navigation whilst I enjoy the driving. Anyone who can afford the Sports Exhaust system should really consider getting one, but expect lots of extra attention (people shouting out of their Ford Fiesta's, lads gawping at the lights, people pointing etc). After 800 miles I can't wait to get back in the driving seat.
I paid £1000 for the whole system from Design911. Replacing the exhaust is a reasonable enough job however the addition of the switch means the central console has to come out and involves roughly double the amount of labour (and complication) involved. It took Posheworks 8 hours to do the job. Mario also referred to a computer that need to read the output etc and match it to the new system. For the sake of a day's labour charge it might be advisable to have a specialist do it.
No, just the Tequipment system itself. For fitting factor in around £350-400 inc vat. It is alot money for simply changing the exhaust note, but believe me there is more to it than that. The car's character has changed fundamentally - it is now an out and out sports car, and less of a GT. I would suggest finding one with it fitted and following it for a while, then you'll start to get the picture (last week some poor guy in a C4S must have thought I was trying to car-jack him!)
I'm getting a porsche sports exhaust fitted next Monday
It's costing £1,500 + VAT (which includes the cost of fitting the switch - which adds £300-£400 because of labour costs).
I hope it's good. I'm a new Porsche owner and haven't ever heard it. But having owned a Porsche for a month now, I can't shake the feeling that it just doesn't sound like a sports car - a little too polite for my liking.
I'll let you know what I think when it's fitted - hopefully won't think it's money wasted.

Don't worry the exhaust note is FAR too loud to hear the tyre noise. Matt 33 that sounds about the right price. I too hadn't been in a car with the system so it came as a wonderful surprise quite how fantastic a noise it makes. It really should be standard. Just starting it up is an event for me now. Also those 996TT boys can't fit one so it's one up to the normally aspirated lads!
very interested in your sports exhaust. have a 2004 trip. 996 4CS and aiming to arm it soon, with exhaust and higher air intake with conical filter. so far, theres OEM switchable, Fabspeed ones, gemballa ones, and FVD, apart from 2 others that did not impress me with what i can see of their pictures and supporting, or lack of, information. the gemballa ones look very different and is like 2 simple boxes at the rear of car, the others seem to be replacements of existing shaped boxes. gemballa claims a fair increase in hp, on top of the sounds. will be installing whatever i get with help of mercedes head mechanic as there's no porsche in town.
please suggest or inform me of anything i might have missed and considered. thanks from australia

Why dont you get your opc to re-wire the sports exhaust system so it doesnt cut out below 30 mph? my opc did this for me before I took delivery of my 996 c4s. It really made it enjoyable reversing out of the garage for an early sunday morning run, waking the neighbours with every blip of the accelerator!
Fabspeed seems to be most popular aftermarket choice due to the high quality vs price factor, however these and others may affect resale value as a potential purchaser may want something more "standard" (keeping your old boxes etc would therefore be a good idea). They also tend to be a bit more aggressive than the Tequipment system. As for the system switching off, it only does this between 30-45mph ie just the speeds one tends to accelerate most through when enjoying oneself. Sarbs, have you had this sorted out whilst still retaining the switchable feature?
I have a 996 targa and have been quoted £875 + vat for a sports exhaust to be fitted by West Tuning. Its not switchable but claims are that it gives 12-15 extra ponies
.
Was told by Camtune where I got the car from that their sports exhaust which is switchable does not give extra power, only noise.
Ray West has assured me that my car should still pass the noise tests for trackdays ( I normally go to Bedford), so it all sounds pretty good as unless its F1 loud, don't see why I would want to switch back the exhaust to quiet setting.
Can anyone advise on what I have set out above - ideally I want extra power and noise
but don't want to spend a ridiculous amount.

The only trouble is that the turbo doesn't have room for it!....but you get 130 extra bhp....ummm close call....thats how much fun the exhaust is !!! get it.

thanks for your feedback on the fabspeed. will bear that in mind, but yes its true the OEM switchable does not give extra bhp, but all the other after market ones do. still making my mind up with which way to go. fr australia
