Increasing luggage space options for a 911

OK, please don't hunt me down and shout abuse at me for this but I am in need of extra luggage space.
We have a 3 month old baby and as you can imagine, she requires a lot of 'stuff' with her if we go away for a overnight or on holiday etc. As such, I am currently struggling to take the 964 on any long trips with the family.
Now, a convoy has been firmly ruled out by Mrs Iddingtons so I am left with two options as I see it:
- A roof box
- (I'll whisper this so as not to get abuse...) A small trailer
Does anyone have experience of either option? The manual insists I can tow 500 Kg un-braked but all I would need is some soft luggage, pram and carry cot sort of thing so all fairly light. I have no idea where to go a tow bar from though and Google hasn’t turned up much of use.
Or am I just doing a terrible job of loading up the car?!

500kg? A trailer? How much stuff does your child need? Have you considered putting the child up for adoption instead. You will be judged less harshly!! :-)Or am I just doing a terrible job of loading up the car?!

I think a roof box is the best option but Porsche versions are an order of magnitude above Thule in price but I expect they'll offer the best and most elegant fit.
Have you tried speccing luggage for the car versus using existing? You do get a decent amount if you maximise the internal space. I wouldn't suggest the Porsche stuff as it's silly prices but some of it is lovely.

-Soft bag for me
-two soft bags for Mrs Iddingtons (That's her packing light!)
-Baby / car seat (in car, not trailer!)
-Pram (Little'un seems to moan constantly in a sling so not an option unfortunately)
-Moses basket or similar to sleep in as not always provided when staying somewhere
-Nappies / change bag / toys etc
This weekend we filled a Ford Kuga with all that 'necessary' stuff simply due to the size of the pram more than anything. I do have a smaller Zapp for once she is older but space will still be tight I think.
I will check out Thule as wasn’t aware of them. Part of me likes the trailer though just because I see me inevitably scratching the car with the roof box if I go down that route.
Has anybody got either on their car? I’ve seen a few pictures of 911’s towing tyres etc. to a track but they all seem to have fabricated their tow bars as opposed to buying an OEM fitment part which concerns me.

The roof box is looking more and more like the way forward. Phelix, your setup is very tempting. I assume if it works on a 993 then it'll work on a 964? How good is the fit of the Thule bars/arms?
I also hadn't realised there was such a speed limit difference. Hmm. That definately pushes me towards the roof box option I think.

On a constructive note, I've just come back from a week away with my wife and 13 month old, admittedly in a 996 turbo. Ok, we have a little less stuff than when the little chap was 3 months old, but not much, and we didn't use any of the extra space you get in a 996 (ie the parcel shelf). We had a Quinny Zapp in the front luggage compartment, along with a few loose bits and bobs (a bag of toys, baby monitor, etc) and a squashy bag full of baby clothes. Two more squashy bags behind the driver's seat, well secured with the seatbelt, and some more stuff in the footwell. On the rear passenger seat, the boy in a Maxi Cosi Tobi, with his changing bag in the rear passenger footwell. Wife in the passenger seat, obviously!
The zapp works fine for new borns as long as you have the right baby seat to fit, so that should save room. We didn't bother with a travel cot as we stayed in hotels or at my parents', so the main snag would be your carry cot. For short trips away you could get away with using the car seat, as long as it isn't for hours on end. For things like sterilisation, just pack a big Tupperware box and some Milton tablets; when you aren't sterilising bottles in it, you can pack it full of baby paraphernalia and lob it in the footwell.
The boy loved his first road trip, provided we stopped every 90 mins or so to give him some fresh air and a change of scenery. I was amazed by the soothing effect of the thrum of the flat six and those 295 rear tyres

In my old 964 I managed to carry 5 people in total (4 ladies in evening gowns + driver, logically).MTR
Now that I am older the 'stuff' I carry around is less exciting but last time I managed to get inside my 997:
48 boxed wine glasses
40 Prosecco bottles
5 small paintings
1 suitcase (carry on size trolley)
1 squishy bag
1 7ft tall lamp (in pieces)
and still had loads of space left!

The bars will work on any air cooled 911 provided it hasn't been to Ruf to shave the rain gutters off. The bars/mounts fit well and are quite secure; I carried a 14 ft extension ladder for 600 miles without issue. Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
