After selling my 928 S4 a few years ago, I've finally managed to convince the Mrs we need a 996 C4S. She whole heartedly agrees it is a terrific family car that will accommodate our young family on weekends out!

My budget is upto £20k, so I'm looking for buying advice from those of you who have knowledge. I've read the threads on manual vs. tiptronic, and as my Mrs will also be driving it (and the 928 was an auto which she was happy to drive), I am probably leaning more towards a tiptronic, although if a manual were to come along within budget, obviously I would be seriously tempted.

Any input on weaknesses, problem areas, mileage limitations, things to look for on the service book and invoices would all be gratefully received.

Buy the the best condition/cared for car you can at your budget; worry less about age/mileage/spec. Good luck!

Looks lovely, and the Mrs likes it, but we have our budget to stick to which is all ready for bank transfer with no part ex. Will start getting out on the road in the next few weeks to start visiting and test driving, although I suspect the first one I see, I'll probably buy subject professional inspection.

regards,

Phil
