I walked in to my local Porsche Centre today ready to buy a new car, unfortunately all the salesman were too busy chatting. Not one person acknowledged my presence, after about ten minutes looking at various cars I gave up and walked out.
Saved myself a fortune. They must be selling so many cars that they don't need to bother looking after customers.

You clearly looked too much like a customer! Unfortunately this is quite a common occurrence.

I've noticed that the less interested I am in them or the cars the more they are interested in me. Also, when popping in after work in a suit I got a lot more attention than in jeans at the weekend. One of the OPC staff told me that they only sell cars to footballers, gangsters and businessmen, so I guess they are profiling people before deciding whether to speak to you or not. If you don't look like any of these three you may be out of luck.

However, the best one was about 15 years ago, when I took my wife into a Mazda dealer as she wanted an MX5. As we walked up to the demo car in the showroom a 'salesman' walked past us and loudly proclaimed that they were "all sold". My wife got about half way through a question in response, and he shot her down with "nope, all sold, sorry" before walking off. It was priceless. So we just walked out and bought something else instead.

How did you manage to avoid the receptionists?
I have never walked in to an OPC without either being greeted or acknowledged by one of them, they are there for a reason & if you told them you were there with money burning a hole in your pocket then I can't believe you didn't get jumped upon!

Half the time I walk through the door they are either on the phone to their friends or deep into their copy of Hello! magazine. They look great, but I always assumed they were there for decoration rather than function...

Porsche are doing well but you do get different opinions on different OPC's, give them a chance as i did and ended up with my dream car at something i could afford.

Have to say that whenever i have dealings with my OPC they are excellent. The receptionists are very good and direct you quickly to someone who can help.

Wish I could say the same. I get happy when they say hello and flash a smile in my direction, but thats usually all they do. Still, a pretty smile, a free diet coke and a drool over some shiny new cars usually makes it all worthwhile (or numbs the pain of the bill from the service department).

I must admit, my dealings when I bought my car from OPC Colchester were very good. They were also great with PEC invites and model launch parties etc.

Shame the service department were less so and I now go elsewhere. When I was called by their marketing company to book my car in for a service and I told them that I wasn't interested and explained why, they said they would note the comments, pass them onto Porsche HQ and get someone to get back to me. That was 1.5 years ago though and I'm still waiting...........

The thread is aimed at the attitude of the salesmen rather than receptionists.

And they were good at OPC Colchester. Great pre-sale, just average service afterwards.

When I set foot on a car lot or a dealer showroom to buy a car I'm there because I have id'd a car that I want.

I wouldn't let the last trump sway me from trying to buy the car.

If you didn't get any attention from the salesman walk up to the sales manager or general manager and in a calm polite but clear way let it be known you made it through a gaggle of sales people without one greeting you.

This puts the dealer at some (probably small) disadvantage from the outset. Then buy your car.

Sincerely,

Rockster.

Depends on what car you turn up in as well. Funny how no one came near me when I was in my Clio Sport, but a couple weeks later in my GT3RS I only got halfway through the door before being jumped on by eager salesmen!

Yep, this. I turned up one in my company car and no one even looked up from their desks; turn up the next day in the 360 and within 5 seconds of me getting out of the car I have an eager salesman stood next to me!

They've always failed to call me back! Being in my line of work however, it's comforting to know just how st the competition is.

Having said the above OP, if you were there to buy a car, perhaps you should have just asked for some help? Some people hate being approached in a car showroom, so a dealer can often do no right by the customer.

I've bought three (new) cars from Porsche over the years. Each time I did prior research and was sure that I wanted that model of car before I even went into the showroom. Had I gone in and felt ignored, I would have approached someone and requested assistance.

Not quite sure what the OP is after - rose pedals at his feet? A piper announcing his arrival? Dancing girls chanting his name? All very nice, but back in the real world a genuine buyer will seek assistance and not discount the entire marque due to feeling a little unloved for a few minutes.
