Looking at a 996 C4S, had a replacement engine (Porsche supplied and fitted) due to IMS failure in Feb this year. Question is being this recent do Porsche fit improved IMS bearings to their replacement engines?
Not too bothered if not as it has its warranty but would nice to know.
Cheers in advance.

Probably.

Any engine built after MY05 will have the bigger bearing.

I'm trying to find this out too for my own engine.

I had a replacement engine fitted in 2009. The engine number shows the year of manufacture as 2004 (for a 3.4l) but that its also a rebuilt engine

So I called the local OPC with the engine number and asked them for the remanufacture date of the engine and if it had the 997 IMS bearing. I should hear back in a few days.

But you could always try this approach with the supplying OPC

If you change engine it has to be the same generation otherwise the ECU won't work. A change of ECU can mean a change of loom. Therefore the bearing in the replacement is *likely* to be the same as that in the busted engine.

Cheers for comments so far.
Understand about ECU etc, but an upgraded bearing i dont think would have any effect on the ECU side of life, after all its a bearing on the end of a shaft and doesnt affect engine performance.

But you could only change the bearing if it actually fits - and I've not heard of any instances where anyone has machined the block to fit a different one.

My understanding is that Porsche themselves modified their replacement engines from 2005/2006 onwards. There were 2 different types of ims bearings used prior to then even.

A Porsche supplied replacement engine comes with all the ancillaries except the air con motor - plus a whole new wiring loom.

Basically its a straight bolt in after you change over the air con motor.

But back on topic - Porsche did modify the engines from 2005/2006 to use the 997 bearing. And that one can't be upgraded or removed with dismantling the engine. The original 2 types of bearings xam be removed.

My money is on it being the 997 bearing in my car and yours. The engine number will tell you the year of manufacture AND whether the replacement engine has been rebuilt. My engine was built in 2004 which is 2 years after they stopped building the 3.4 and its marked as rrmanufactured.

Alan, cheers for the detailed post.
It will has a Porsche warranty anyway so not duly concerned. Now just need to view car and finalise the deal!
