Jesus, its only taken 20 years for the mags to catch on. The wise ones amongst us have known that for years.

I'm not sure they have moved that much on price if at all. My mate bought his C4 for 18.5k 7 years ago and sold it 2 years later for 16.9k. It had 85k miles on it and he bought and sold via a trader. My 85k miles C2 manual cost me 19k 4 months ago, they're both in the same condition and red.

Are prices really going up?
Could it be that the good cars are holding their price, while the poor cars are dropping out of the market, or getting fixed so that they become good cars?

Well the front cover title is 'Rise of the 964' and the feature is on the C2, RS and turbo with some limited editions like the 3.8

I've been watching the prices of them for the last 18 months and there certainly seems to be less of the low teens and more of the low twenties coming up for sale.

Maybe just advertising price but i remember someone running a thread on here about picking up a usable C2 for £10k and managing it.

Not gonna happen now unless it's got history or issues. The latter i wouldn't mind but the same cars seem to be going for about £15k upwards now, plus your £5-10k to make it good again, they're definitely starting to head north on the whole it would seem.

It does seem that a lot more cars have had rebuilds nowadays and I thiink the owners are trying to get back some of the cash thrown a these cars. Its very easy to sink £10k into one if you need a rebuild, suspension refresh and a bit of bodywork. Fine if you get a car for low money.

Its the cars with sub 80k miles and no rebuild commanding close to £20k that would make me very nervous about buying. When adds mention factory condition, I run away as that usually means a lot of parts require a refresh.

The difficulty is that right or wrong there is less of a market for 150k plus mile cars with expensive work completed than a 50k mile car with issues. The latter can definitely be improved, and may potentially show a return.

Much of the 964's price move is driven by good 993s moving into the >£30k bracket.

I always think that a 964, 3.2 Carrera and SC is a £20k car - whether it is all in the purchase price or in cheap purchase plus remedial work.

Cheap 964s are still out there (I bought one recently) but I doubt very much that there are cheap 964s that don't require £££ of work.

That said, the £££ of work may not need doing right now - my own car was not much more than £10k and all it needs are too ancillary oil leaks fixing at a few hundred quid. The £££ I am spending on new suspension, wheels and bodywork is optional or at least deferrable.

Thats a fair point although often lack of use in recent years can be a reason for seals etc drying out. If its been serviced on the dot every year then thats different to the often advertised lower mileage examples that havent`t had much use in recent years and have beens serviced on mileage rather than time. However the point I was trying to make (albeit badly) is I`d rather pay say £19k for a sorted 100k+ miler than £19k for one lower miler without a rebuild. Having gone through the rebuild process I think the premium for low mileage does not add up. There will of course be exceptions to this but its just my opinion.

Sorry for the thread hyjack.

A rebuild is not a panacea and shouldn't be considered as such.

My 964 has 85k miles and has never been rebuilt because it has never needed to be. I had it inspected by GT One and there is some non-urgent work on the engine to keep it perfect but nowhere near a full or top end rebuild in their opinion.

I do wonder how many of these garages doing top-ends for owners terrified by what they read on forums are screwing these complex and race-bred engines together to the same degree of diligence that the factory did.

Regarding cheap cars, you can buy them, there is a chap on 911uk that bought one from the guy who bought it from a chap on here (now residing at HM's pleasure) who IIRC was boasting that finding £10k 964s was "easy". The current owner of that car is now £10k into sorting out the mess.

But I think that goes for any old Porsche.

You don't need to worry if you choose the right one. There are some extremely good independent engine re-builders out there that do quality work. Many of which will be more than happy to let you pop along and watch the work in progress. In fact, I highly recommend anyone who has a rebuild undertaken, make time to go and see it being done. It's very enlightening but it's also not cheap!

Here's a nice solid late model targa in yellow.

Never raced or rallied and kept in a nice dry climate:

The 'engine rebuild' chatter has gotten to carried away just like the panic over RMS issues on 996 and 997's.
An inspection by an expert will tell you weather an engine needs a rebuild or not irrespective of mileage.
Some cars have had rebuilds after 30k miles so it's as much about maintenance as anything else

I have spent a fortune on my 964 and there is still stuff that needs to be done...the problem is, once you get the big problems out of the way you notice all the small ones smile
