60K MK1 GT3 or 17K MK2 GT3 - Opinions please.
Discussion
Not the most interesting post chaps so don't flame me but I bumped into my mate on Sunday and a family friend of his.
They are both considering selling. Brief specs -
My mates car, which I've known for 4 years is a 1999 MK1 GT3 Clubsport in guards red. 60,000 miles (bit higher than I'd like), £11k spent over the 4 years. £7k spent since last year on rads, suspension, wheel refurb, setup by Redline racing etc.
£34k but needs minor stonechipping to the bonnet and leading edges of the side skirts sorting. So I'd have £35k-ish in it straight away.
His friends car which I've also known since he bought it is a 2005 MK2 GT3 Clubsport in Silver. 17,000 miles.
Car has had 3 owners inc. current guy. He is a retired school teacher, previous owner was an elderly guy and first owner bought the car new from Newcastle OPC. This is the only place the car has ever been, with all 3 owners.
Since its first owner Peter at RPR626, a guy I know well and have bought from before has sold the car both times it's changed hands. Really mint original paint/panel car with low miles.
He'd like £38k but may drop a tad as there is some very very minor laquer peel on the rear of the spokes.
So I'd have the same money in both basically. Here's how I feel -
MK1 - Colour is a proper GT3 colour in my eyes. I want red or yellow. I love the rarity of the MK1, so it really gets me excited. It has the red centre console which brightens up the interior. I just love that car.
BUT
My mate still doesn't definitely know if he'll part with it. He's close and we've agreed on £34k but I just don't know whether to hang fire and run the risk of missing the silver car?
MK2 - Perfect example that has had such an easy life. I could use it quite a bit and it would still be low mileage.
Interior is all black, bit bland and exterior colour doesn't excite me. I love the MK2 styling and wheels though and they're a tad quicker.
So any opinions welcome. I like cars that are a bit rarer, brighter (Not for posing but just because I like them) and that feel special. I know neither is exactly common but the MK1 is mega rare and I love it. The silver car is the better car on paper but I don't get as excited about it....yet.
I've been in the MK1 a fair bit over the years but never a MK2 but to be honest I know I'll love either so a test drive isn't necessary until I'm ready to say "Yes that's the one I want."
So which would you choose? Hang on for the MK1 or just grab the mint MK2?

Mk2 for me no contest. My mk2 was the best car I ever owned, felt special in every way, perhaps even more so than my current 997 gt3. Ok silver may not be your first colour choice but how many years enjoyment are you going to have before it's at 60k? and what milage would be on the 60k one by then? I'm sure they are both great cars but buying a good mk2 is something you won't regret...I would have mine back in a flash, almost did in fact but that's another story!

Easy one this, hold out for the Mk1. As you've said, it's a proper GT3 colour for a start ! Mk2 in silver ? Sorry, but dull, dull, dull. They are both considering selling. Brief specs -

I chatted to Darren at Nick Whale Cars at the weekend. The silver Mk2 they have is a lovely example, it's now sensibly priced, but they've had little or no interest in it. It's been in stock a long time. Did I mention silver on a Mk2 GT3 is dull ?
You're right about the Mk 1, there's something very "special" about them, it's not easily explained (especially when the Mk2 chaps keep butting in that their cars are technically "better" !) Being a CS, the Mk1 is rarer still.
I know of two Mk1 owners, both post on here, both cars have over 60K miles on them and run faultlessly. My Black example has 56K miles on it and my SY has just turned 40K this morning.
The one thing you need to be aware of with the Mk1 is it's twelve years old now, it will need ongoing annual maintenance to keep it in tip top condition and driving as its makers intended. The silver Mk2 (that's a dull colour for a Mk2 GT3 BTW) will most likely need less money spent over the next few years.
Buy the Mk1 and at some point you'll be faced with the same dilemma as your mate. I've not heard many Mk2 owners rueing the fact they sold their cars, read into that what you will . . . .
P.S I appreciate my views are totally biased and thus not worth a fig.

Did I mention that silver on a Mk 2 GT3 is . . . . .

Having owned both a MK1 & Mk2 there both great cars.
But go for the newiest and lowest mileage you can afford.
The mk2 is a better car slightly, improvements are not made for no reason.
But having said that mileage is not an issue get it checked out by someone that knows GT3s history is key. Make sure all consumables have been refreshed try to gather as much info on any GT3 your thinking of buying.
Thats the best advice get it checked and check its history.
Oh and another thing theres no such thing as a cheap GT3 its cheap for a reason.
I would rather pay 3 or 4 k more than the cheapest example up for sale and get a good un but thats me. A refresh can be up to 10k.
Only my opinion of a GT3 owner. I dare say many others will be alone soon.
Good luck.

Cheers for the input Irish, that's the dilema. The silver car is as new and if I let my head decide it does win but, I've never just bought cars with my head.
I know either car will be epic when I'm in it. We'll see.
Evenin' Slippy, I was hoping you'd give your opinion, given your knowledge of all things GT*.
I agree with all that. Nothing watercooled (apart from the RSs) excites me anything like my old 964T, except the MK1 GT3. There's just something about them and the fact I know the red one well, is even better.
Totally happy with the running costs. It's nothing my 964T wouldn't have cost me, except at least the paintwork is still bright red on the GT3, so bar a few stonechips to be dealt with, there'll be no major respray to sort out.
I think deep down I know the answer and that's to wait and hope my mate will part with the red car. There's no rush anyway, but when presented with that silver 05 reg car my head was saying "Just buy it and be done with the search".
I've just been drooling over your yellow car in the other thread. Stunning. Is it a Clubbie? That's a nice find eitherway.

I was replying while you posted. Both are fairly priced with nothing at all to hide but I agree, bills can come quickly.
The silver car is factory standard and has had nothing but servicing.

Thanks for your thoughts. I've been racking my brains since Sunday. The guy selling the silver one is travelling all over on the train this week looking at possible next cars, so I want to try and decide by the weekend really.

My mate knows the history of his red MK1. Owned by a Lemans driver when it was new has had a few upgrades like the brakes etc. Nothing too radical though, that would be hard to return to standard.

H Mark,
I was in a similar position recently and after driving examples of each went for the Mk1. Whilst mine doesn't have as high a mileage as the one you're looking at, I don't think that would have put me off, if everything else was right. 60k isn't that much really. One of the Mk2s I was offered was absolutely mint and factory fresh with less than 15k on the clock so perhaps objectively a better car and financial proposition, but it just didn't grab and involve me in the same way as the Mk1.
IMO the purchase of a GT3 is by and large a truly emotional, 'heart' driven purchase and for that level of indulgence you should never think 'what if' or turn a bit green at the lights when the model you really want deep down pulls up along side.
That's my own take on it though and we're really talking small degrees of difference. I don't think I would have been that upset hooning around in a MK2, but you did ask the question!!
Cheers

I owned a LHD GT3 mk1 for 2.5 years and loved it, but to be honest in this case I think the choice is more difficult because the prices are quite close and the mileages "miles" (sorry) apart. I sold mine 2.5 years ago and at that time the MK2's were prob 8k more with a bit less mileage, now they are much closer. You couild argue that if the MK1 had 17k miles it would be the same rpice and I guess that tells you somethinbg.
I spent about 6k on mine over my ownership (the last owner spent 7k in the 2 years before that) and it probably needed another 5k when I sold it - the older cars will prob need a little more spending as other have said.
Its a tough one but I never drove a mk2 so can't help you on that score...
I still miss my heavily modified 964 C2 most though.....

Yeah, cheers Slodge. You're exactly the type of person I wanted the opinion of, having had the chance of both yourself.
The 60k doesn't bother me. It's no ultra-low mileage garage queen but it's probably the lowest mileage I'll have had on a 911 as all my previous were 100k miles aircooled models.
I met my mate and co up at a local show on Sunday. My mate left early in the Mk1 and as he drove off I thought "I want that car!"
I walked past the Mk2 a few times that afternoon and whilst I thought "Yeah, nice subtle car." I didn't think "I have to have it."
I think that's my answer really, but I just can't get the miles and condition of the silver one out of my head.
I think at the minute though I'll just have to hope my mate hurries up and makes his decision on the red one.

Heart or head? It's possible to buy a GT3 with your head?!?
I couldn't think straight when I bought mine and (a few extremely large bills aside) I'm very happy that I was blinded by Speed Yellow
I've never been in a Mk 2 996 GT3, but while I look longingly at *all* GT3s there's no way I get anywhere near as hot under the collar about Mk 2s as I do Mk 1s. I think it's part rarity and part that spoiler. I need some time alone now...drool.
There's definitely something to be said about GT cars in bright colours, too. A Mk 2 997 GT3 in GT Silver rates up there for me, but the earlier cars look fantastic in the crazier colours. They deserve to look a bit out there in my opinion.
There's not a single car I covet now that I have the Mk 1. The occasional temporary madness about 355s, perhaps, but that's it. I'm happy when ensconced in those buckets.

There used to be a nice red GT3 in weybridge which I regularly drove past. I know red is no longer en vogue, but I thought it looked great. When I was looking for a new car my criteria was reasonably straightforward, I'd consider any colour other than silver for some of the reasons above. 60k is still only 5k or so miles a year, not exactly mega miles

Definitely, and you'd be kidding yourself if you thought otherwise IMO. 17K miles in seven years ? My SY car has done 12K in the last seven years. It needed new diagonal arms on the front and new coffin arms on the rear.I was replying while you posted. Both are fairly priced with nothing at all to hide but I agree, bills can come quickly.

Low miles is no guarantee of perfect mechanicals. Older, low mileage, garage queens don't tend to be used in anger as much as those cars that are more frequently driven. As a result the deterioration of components occurs without the owner noticing. It's only when a prospective purchaser gets behind the wheel, or a PPI inspection/roadtest gets carried out that the issues get noticed.

Whats's not to like, after all, you still get that rear spoiler.
I just think the Mk2 shape is bland, add in Silver and it looks just, well, dull !
And just for the OP :
(Never sure if this is Guards or Zanzibar on a dull day, but suspect it's Guards)
(hope the owner of this car doesn't mind me using his image)
OP... I was in the same position as you 4 years ago, but the cars and colours were reversed.
I bought a 15K mile Speed Yellow Mk2 over a 30K mile Silver Mk1. I agree with what many have said about the unique feel of the Mk1, but for me the sheer number of standard Mk1 996`s with the GT3 Mk1 kit on them diluted the appeal for me.
Each to their own, but having lived with my Mk2 ever since I am not sorry.
BTW, my dampers were leaking after 16K miles, my original PS2`s were manufacured with 1503 date stamps and dont be fooled by low miles...
Happy hunting
