I know this is a fairly basic question but thought I'd ask the experts!

I'm planning to change the battery in my 996 C4S this weekend, a 2002 car.

I've bought a replacement from Eurocarparts, a Bosch S5 heavy duty blah.

I have two questions, aside from the basic task of removing the old battery and fitting the new one:

1. Is there anything I can do to stop the alarm going off mid task?

2. Once the new battery is connected, do I need to reset anything or should everything work just fine?

Thanks in advance!

If you leave the ignition turned on it'll suppress the alarm. Afterwards it'll just work, nothing to do.

Leave it disconnected for half an hour and all the parameters will reset so fill with super unleaded beforehand and you'll get more zip.

If the radio has a security code, make sure you know it.

After switching the ignition on, turn off all the loads you can (aircon, radio, internal lights, etc) before disconnecting the battery - negative terminal first.

I've heard you are very handy with stuff like this so surprised you need to ask. After all you successfully filled your other diesel car with petrol.

no need to switch ign all the way to 'ON', just turn key to first click.

I did mine recently and just used the jump leads to keep it permanently connected to a power source. It is possible with a bit of juggling. Someone mentioned utilising a trickle charger to do the same.

That's not entirely fair. Somebody told me it was a hybrid car.

Perfect timing for this thread- I'm planning to do the very same, also on a 2002 C4S. My worry is also the alram and radio codes- don't think I have the code to hand!

Anyway, a new battery through Porsche here in Switzerland is at least 300 quid before fitting- doing it myself is a no brainer!

All done. That was easy! Didn't even ask for a radio code.

Well done mate. All you need to do now is pop down to cosco and grab yourself a few litres of oil and it would have been a good day's work!
Ps I have heard that the psm is programmed to the vin of each car and hence no code needed (if it is indeed the PCM you have. Not sure if normal radio is same and not sure if only facelift onward)

Haha. I can only dream of the savings to be made by buying your own oil in Costco!

Mine doesn't have PCM but a CDR-23. Just as well it didnt ask for a code, as I couldn't find one anyway. There was a 5 digit code on the Vehicle Identification label in the handbook under 'I Equipment' but I wasn't sure whether this was the one or not and in any event it wasn't required.
