Wondered if somebody could help - trying to jump start my 996 but am just getting the clicking sound when i turn the key. Not been started for about 3 months. Does this mean the battery is completely dead and needs replacing? Don't want to buy a new one to realise there is another problem! It doesn't fire in any way......is there any sort of immobiliser i might need to deactivate? Help much appreciated.

Yeah defo a dead battery esp if you havent started it in 3 months. I had same problem but after 6 months leaving it parked up.

Could try charging the battery but you prob find that it wont hold charge.....recommend the bosch s5 battery from eurocarparts as it comes with 5yr guarantee.

Last time mine died i took it back and they swapped it for a brand spanking new fully charged one....hey ho

Even if the battery is completely dead you should still be able to jump the car. Either the jump leads are crap or the car your jumping off is not man enough. If its off a battery pack, its not man enough either.

Definitely worth checking that you are not using 50 pence bargain aluminium jump leads that cant carry enough current to turn your engine.

If possible use a C Tech battery conditioner when you have replaced the battery to stop the next battery dying prematurely.

ThaNk you for your suggestions. I was charging off a Lexus rx but wonder because it is a hybrid mix whether that is good enough. Also my jump leads are dreadful. Two things to try before stumping up for a new battery.

New battery will be the best solution here.

I removed all sorts of trim to find my battery today. It's the size of a small planet! Presumably something to do with the ghastly stop/start feature.
