Took the garage queen out the other day and the noise from the gearbox has become unbearable.

I get a seriously loud whine when on the gas, but when lift off it disappears - done some research and apparently it could be the pinion or main shaft bearing or both.

The noise originally started happening when going over 55mph and now it started happening at lower speeds.

Anyone shed any light as to how much this is going to cost to put right?

I have access to a lift and tools and can whip the gearbox out in few hrs, just need to know whether worth fixing it or getting a recon unit?

99 year car with 51k miles c2 no lsd, has traction control.

Any advice much appreciated.

Any particular gear, or all of them?

Can't really hear it in first gear or second gear (unless really give it some beans in 2nd), can hear it in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th, starting to hear it over 30mph.

yes
He regularly gets boxes delivered on pallets from various garages (often Porsche specialists).

Does anyone know if a 997 c2 gearbox will be a direct swap?

The whine will be a knackered pinion bearing in the diff.

Mine started with a feint whine on the power in 6th, and over the years it got worse. It now whines in every gear on the power and also makes a horrible grinding noise off the power. Plus it jumps out of 1st gear and won't go in to 2nd above 3k on down changes.

Currently in for a full re-build.

It's not a DIY job... apparently you need a 40 ton press to get the bearing out and a new one in.

Sounds like its what i thought then, can i ask how much a rebuild is? Mine isnt jumping out of any gears, goes into all gears smoothly.

Not sure yet.

The gearbox came out yesterday and they are stripping it down to see what the damage is before giving an estimate.

I think Sportscar & Classic quote somewhere around £1,500 + vat on their web site for a pinion bearing... mine will need a lot more than that and it will likely be cheaper for me to try and source a 2nd hand box.

Hi,

We actually charge £1200 plus vat to rectify a pinion bearing noise on 996 C2/C4 gearbox.

We can normally save the gearbox but if it has been to another repair shop and not repaired correctly then we may struggle as the gears are an interference press fit onto the shafts. You only get 3 goes at press fitting them and the factory count as the first one. Some of the pressures involved are as much as 45 tonnes.

We are seeing more of these that have been taken to so called specialist repair places and destroyed beyond all recognition with damage caused to casings, shafts and broken gears.

If you want the gearbox repairing correctly then as far as I am aware there are few places that are tooled up to cope with the Getrag 6 speed gearboxes as fitted to these models.

We do these gearboxes for customers all around the world so that says something in itself....

Hi mike, thanks for your reply. What is your current turnaround time? If i dropped it off on a monday, roughly how many days before i can pick it back up?

Are there any other modifications that you do or suggest to have done to the transmission whilst replacing the bearing? I dont track the car.

Being a sealed bearing which i believe is the reason why they fail in the first place, is there any new versions or mods to prevent it failing again in the future?

I have spoke to a few gearbox "specialists" local to me and they have said it same as the audi gearbox bearings which have to be pressed off. Obviously being my own car i want it done right. I have my own ramp fitted in my garage as i maintain the car myself so removing it and shipping it off is not a problem.

Hi,

We can normally turn it round in 3-4 days, It is nothing like the Audi gearbox as fitted to the 2.5L boxster. These are a specialist job and as such we have invested ££££ in tooling and research. We modify the internals as standard when doing a pinion bearing.

Feel free to contact us if you need any further information.
