In the hunt for a decent 996 Turbo I had my heart set on a X50, which with a Fearnsport remap would see around 530bhp, however if I was to get a standard Turbo and get it remapped I'm guessing 490-500 would be realistic. Would I miss out on that extra bhp v the quicker spool up of the standard car? Im guessing buy on condition and not stick to an X50? Also what is the general consensus on Meridian silver? Ive not seen it in the flesh but had my heart set on Polar or Seal grey.

Meridian looks quite pink or purple to me but maybe my eyesight is getting bad with age. As for extra power, I don't get it. Surely if you use all the grip and traction, the "boggo" car must be devastatingly quick for road use as it is, as in lose your licence within minutes quick ?

Yes it certainly is. Lose license or life. Dangerously quick. Too quick. But once you are used to it. Can be tempting to remap. I haven't gone down that route myself. But I hear its addictive. I'm happy with it as it is.

From what i've read on here, the standard TT is more tunable and the X50 is more laggy

I too would be tempted to go for a tune. Cars I have had done previously have been much smoother and had improved fuel economy to go with the extra performance. win win!!

I felt the stock turbo was already quick enough, and was the first car I've had where I really did think it was too fast for UK roads.

Even so, I saw enough posts suggesting that I only had half the car I could have compared to a mapped one, so I decided to give it a try. It's ridiculously quick now - I can honestly say, I have never ever felt I am missing something by having a non-X50 car, even pre-map.

Remapped non x50 is pound for pound the best turbo. There are no drawbacks, it's like the standard car, only more. Watch your braking distances though, because you won't notice the extra speed once you're used to it and those brakes need a hefty push!.

Would not agree at all, What draw backs does the X50 have?

I meant there are no drawbacks to remapping the non x50. If you want to chase bigger numbers them an x50 would Do the job. The point being the early cheap cars aren't x50s but will remap to make the car to all intents and purposes As fast as as a 997 turbo, its the brake horsepower bargain of the century.Check your car hasn't been remapped already or it might be a wasted trip!, loads have been done by now.

Meridien silver is silver with a tint of gold, pretty horrible IMHO so stick with boring arctic or nice polar, unfortunately many spec polar cars with metropole leather not black

I guess it all depends on what you want as to where you should start & research.

I have driven in and been in stock and modded 911's and after visiting several VMax events, went for a Seal Grey X50 with DMS Stage 2, brake & suspension upgrades etc.

Love the car to bits and having taken a colleague with a stock 6TT out, he was shocked how much faster my car was. That's lead to him visiting Ken @ 9E to scope out his project car and putting his car up for sale. Knowing the hybrid's Ken now offers, I think I might have bought a stock Turbo & gone to him, but too late now.

I've seen 191 MPH at Brunters & done a couple of trackdays and love the all round capability of the car. The wife uses it to go to school on occasion & popping to shops. It's been used in the snowy winters with great effect too.

StuB, what did the DMS stage 2 comprise of. Was it just a remap or were other parts fitted?

This Evo review sums up the transformation quite well.

thanks StiB. Do you think that it is a true 550 bhp. I only ask as there are a lot of tuners out there and i have been told by one tuner that most X50 tunes with remap and exhaust only put out around 490 to 510 bhp. Have you ever timed it 0 to 100 or 1/4 mile?

What boost is it running to and has it ever cut the power when on track and running hot.

Not been dyno'd in my custody, but ran 189-191 every time @ VMax and never felt anything other than strong under heavy use, so think 550 is fairly honest. Dyno's also vary as do ambient conditions and 'transmission losses' used too.

As a benchmark, it showed a Noble M600 it's arse upto about 100 at Brunters.

The quoted figure is irrelevant when all is said & done, iit drives very well.

..I'm trying to balance the extra cost of a TT-S which is X50, but has the 6 pot front brakes too.. the stock turbo/X50 brakes are enough on my 4S, but I wouldn't want any more go, without any more stop..!
