Yes I know there is a thread on this already but this is specifically Porsche related. Is anyone who has a 997 or 987 getting an Iphone 5? I am due for an upgrade but I am concerned that it wont fit in the centre box once the adaptor to change the docking standard has been applied. Porsche do not know when they will be able to make a new cable available. Was just wondering if anyone has got one and whether it fits.

The phone is only released today and the adapters not until October so suspect you will have to wait for the answer.

Watchdog were making a fuss about that the other night. I won't be upgrading for a while down to that and the problem with the map feature.

Looking at the pics though, I reckon it'll fit.

There is an adaptor with a cable section, so one way or the other space will not be an issue. Whether the PCM 3 iPod integration actually works at all is the real question (even with the adaptor it is already known that not all features of BMW's solution will work), otherwise your old phone has just become a permanent music repository or you'll want to consider the outgoing 16Gb Nano or the 160Gb classic.

The complete cable from Apple won't work as the Porsche integration attaches through its own input and USB power. Anyone who has a PCM 3 with iPod integration will know what I mean

In a 997.2 this is correct, but as I understand it the 981/991 just have a USB connection and work fine? Doing a little Googlage today indicates that people in the US have started to get their 30 pin to Lightning adaptors now and [drum roll] apparently it works correctly with the 997.2 after all. Which is the point where I go and place an order... thumbup

Thats what I wanted to hear. I knew it would work just wondered if it would fit in the centre box with the adaptor on. I notice on the 991 and 981 that the connection has moved to the glovebox for more space.

my solution goes something like this . . . .

1 - buy Spyder to attach to iPhone 4S with iOS 4.0 installed - life is dandy and perfect!!!
2 - install iOS 5.0 when its released - nothing works properly, phonebook listings totally empty, can only search up to N, music delivery is slow - basically its st!
3 - drop iPhone 4S on the cobbles and smash it to bits - by accident of course - upgrade to iPhone 5 - PCM cable is now defunct FFS!
4 - install old iPhone 4S into center console for music
5 - pair iPhone 5 with PCM, keep it safely in shirt pocket (where the iPhone 4S fell from) and hope for the best

fking PCM
fking APLPLE & their "UPDATES" - should be called backdates
SHAT FCK bkS!!!!

and . . . . breathe!

This is the point of the conversation. There are reports on some of the US centric forums confirming that if you get the apple lightning to 30 pin adaptor cable then it will work for connecting that PCM cable to your iPhone 5. So not defunct so long as you are prepared to give the fruit company yet another £30. The one with the 20cm cable is supposedly the one to get as otherwise the cubby space is apparently a bit of a squeeze.

The bad news is that Apple are quoting the thick end of a fortnight for delivery of the adaptors, but I don't expect a struggle to endure that.

This was my whole point. I wondered if it would fit because you cant buy the 20cm cable as it doesnt have the connection you need for the PCM.

Erm - yes it does (it only differs from the other adaptor by having some wire between the 2 plugs). And people claim to have had success with it. I'll confirm definitively when mine arrives in a couple of weeks if nobody else does in the interim.

oh right sorry i thought you were talking about a lightening to usb cable which would fit in the car but wouldnt connect to the pcm as you need the din connection too. I will look it up. Thanks.

I asked Porsche UK when a cable would be available and they said they had no idea if there would be one as the connection on the 981 and 991 is different now it has moved to the glovebox

Definitive answer time.

I have my iPhone 5 'Lightning to 30-pin Adaptor', the one with the 20cm cable between the 2 ends of the connector. I have just tried it on my 997.2 PCM iPod connector and it works. Plays, charges, track listings - all good. Although there is a fair bit of wire in there now, it all fits along with the normal detritus that I keep in there and the lid on the armrest cubby closes normally with the phone inside as it should. I don't think it would using the adaptor without the cable though.

So, everything is good (with the possible exception of the price of the adaptor of course). With this in mind I am fairly certain that Porsche will not offer their own cable for this purpose, so for everyone with a dock connector and an iPhone 5 it is shopping time.
