I drive a Gen 1 997 C4 and a 375 BHP 335i.

So I took a Gen 2 Cayman S out for a drive yesterday. Its just so much fun to drive, its so small and nimble even compared to my 911. However it just felt like it needed more power especially low down in the rev range. Give it another 50 bhp and it would really come to life!

But then the Cayman would be as fast/good as the 911 and that is not what the Germans want.

Well the new boxter is not far behind a 991 so lets hope the new cayman gets close also.

If you use all of the lateral grip and traction, I really can't see the need for more power for a road car. Surely the progressive nature of the torque delivery is EXACTLY what you need to go fast smoothly and stay just within the limits of traction coming out of corners as it allows a more natural way to balance the car in proportion to the amount of lock released. I always assumed that was Porsche's approach to car dynamics.

if you wish you can get 345BHp out of these for little outlay

as said if a Cayman had 350BHp as standard it would be to fast in Porsche line up.

but imo now the 911 is more GT than ever there is clearly a market for a 380BHp Cayman

rumors only have the 2013 Cayman S at 330Bhp though which is a shame for a 65K sports car.

Bear in mind that Car and Driver got a 981S manual to 60 in 4.4 seconds, I don't think it's THAT much of a shame - just how fast do you need to go for £60 odd grand? The 987c was mildly quicker than the 987 Boxster, so if the 981 is quicker could we see PDK Caymans running 60 in 4s dead? That's quick enough for me.

no one cares about 60mph times, buy a 4WD car if that's your bag, MY TTRS did 3.5 seconds.

it's all about 100 to 200 kph times and for this you need a bit more BHp

360BHp would be a nice sweet spot for a Cayman imo ad make more sales.

Well that's true - 0-60 times are pointless in most regards, but indicative of a fair amount of pace and I'm just not sure that more power is what's needed - I'd rather the cars lost some weight I think.

This has been happening since the mid 80's when the 944 turbo got too close the 911.

Knowing what people do to their cars in the UK, why would this be illegal?

Surely not on emissions or noise otherwise it would be illegal in states like California as well. Aftermarket turbo's have been fitted to everything from Corsa's onwards.

The EU law proposals regarding non-approved parts has not even got to consultation stage yet, let alone ratified.

A simple answer to the hierarchy problem is to bump up the power across the range. Each car should be 20-50bhp more powerful, in my opinion. It's slightly disappointing to have a proper sports car that is slower in a straight line than executive cars and even a TTRS (which is a hideous car).

If you are happy to move to the 981 Cayman, you could always do the RUF upgrade with the 991 3.8l engine...

Errr no the 944 turbo pissed all over every contemporary 911 in its day inc the 911 turbo! Love your car buy the way - wheels really transform it - these are going to start moving even further north in value soon. Not many good cars left.

My god , has it just come down to how much power a car has!!!. I couldn't use all the power in my 2.9 cayman without entering speeds that would get me walking everywhere . It's just stupid. Why is top speed a ,major factor in making a car a sports car. One of the truly excellent drivers cars of this century is an Elise , whose design brief was "a car that it's fun at 30mph"
In my opinion, the new cayman is not as good a drive as the old one, it has too much grip!

It is only really during overtaking manoeuvres that I would like more torque/power (and I mean a lot!) in my 2.9l Cayman.

330bhp is plenty for a 1350kg car.

It needs lower gearing and skinnier tyres.
