Newbie Spec'g 911..Advice Please
Discussion
assuming its your money, your first 911, and you worked hard for it , I'd be looking around for a used one, up to 2 years old , in the COLOUR you want! ( most people specced silver believe it or not).
The 996C4S came with a fair bit of kit included, I'd definitely look for satnav on the optional extras fitted. If after running it for a bit you like it then that would be a good start to deciding if you want to trade up to a (new) 997 which I think is about 18 month wait but any OPC will tell you.

Oldtimer, thanks. Indeed it is my hard earned cash (ehem). I am also a Porsche virgin. I had a TVR before and now a BMW. What im looking for is performance with bullet proof reliability and I believe Porsche will fit the bill. I'd only buy from a main dealer. Any recommendations?

hi Adam, I got my 996 from Lancaster at Colchester , they were OK and mainly they had the car I wanted....
I'm sure someone will join in the thread to suggest dealers that are OK, bit difficult on public forum to point out the 'not OK' experiences.
BTW for performance and reliability Porsche are great choice, my comment based on driving to track days , putting plenty of heat on tyres pads consumables , and being very confident that the same car would drive home. Recommend you do plenty of research , best place is existing owners. Join Porsche Club GB , and if you can visit the event at Brands Hatch this Sunday / Monday , its open to the public ( see thread elsewhere on this forum )..you may learn a lot and find the car of your dreams

adam, i bought a c4s in feb this year. i like to think i have a good eye for detail and was keen on getting a good spec. as oldtimer says the car comes with a fairly high spec level anyway. what was important to me was black leather sport seats with crested headrests. in my opinion be wary of the ruffled leather seats - bit of a lady boy option in my opinion. sat nav is important but i wasn't fussed by it and don't have it. from a colour perspective, seal grey metallic, arctic silver and basalt black metallic are the best colouts to go for (in that order) although i'm sure this topic could be debated forever and a day. i like colour crested wheel inserts as opposed to the standard '4s' inserts. sunroof is important too. i got the dealer to put in carbon fibre gear stick and handbrake. you can get these 'packs' eg arctic pack, carbon fibre pack etc both large and small which basically means the amount of the inside is in the chosen 'pack' design. my view is that the large packs are a bit OTT. subtlety is the order of the day.
having said all that, they ain't cheap and you have to buy what you like not what you think will resell best (although there is a balance of course). either way they are a damned fine car, you won't be disappointed. they come with a switchable sports exhaust which give the car a nice growl. hmmm.
as far as dealers are concerned, they're all a bunch of cowboys, but porsche centre reading will have the largest choice, especially if they take you to their huge car park out back of cars that are awaiting preparation... let us know how you get on...

It's all down to taste, the C4S has a good spec anyway. I'd look for the following extra's
PCM (Sat/Nav/phone)
Bose sound system.
Porsche sports exhaust (if possible, but can be retro-fitted so no problem)
Sports seats are nice, but some find them too narrow.
Plus a few interior extra's to lift the cabin..e.g alloy handbrake & gear lever is probably the nicest.
prices are softening because of the 997, so be sure to negotiate hard,I'd look at a low mileage "circa" two year old car with some of the depreciation gone but the C4S will still look fabulous alonside a 997!
Don't forget you can now also find nice 996TT (Turbo's) beginning with the figure 6...tempting!
