Cayman major engine issues.
Discussion
I realise a great deal of these issues are talked about on forums and done to death on a regular basis but.......
I'm interested to know if anyone has had a major issue, by which I don't mean RMS or AOS problems, with a post '06 2.7 Cayman (when IMS etc was supposed to be improved dramatically)?
Why I hear you scream, we've talked about this before, but what I'm trying to work out is if there is any link to engine capacity and engine failure - it would seem, from what I've read that larger capacity engines i.e S models, are more prone to failure than the smaller engines, I've no hard evidence to back this up (which is why I ask for your input)but it would be interesting (to me at least) to have a look and your participation in this thread is appreciated.

Try and extend your research to 987 Boxster 2.7. It's the same car with the same engine and this may give you more feedback.

I've had a look at that thread but the waters there are pretty muddied with b
hing and the like, I'm looking for clear evidence, I'm not interested in getting into a bun fight with anyone.
Good point on extending the question to post '06 2.7 Boxsters, so lets do that.
You wont get any clear evidence from anywhere i am afraid.

Just do your research and then make your own mind up on the level of risk.

The 2.7 is definitely less prone to bore scoring, as far as anyone can establish(as hartech posted here a while back).
Not 100% sure for IMS but I believe the M97 engine that is in the Cayman has the uprated IMS bearing, still may not be 100% safe but its an improvement over the 986 M96 gen cars from what I have heard and read.
The hartech boys are as good an authority on these engines and their various issues as you are likely to find, and they have buyers guides on their website last I looked.
