993 Heat exchanger
Discussion
Removed silencers and tailpipes. Whilst checking everything over underneath, I have found a hole at the front edge of the offside heat exchanger where the stainless has rotted away. The holes about the size of a 10 pence piece.
If I understand correctly this is a cover to the exchanger underneath. The pipe beneath, of what I can see looks fine.
Two questions:
1, Would this be an MOT failure as it stands
2, Is there any way to cover this hole 'in situ' ie repair it, as twenty years of mud and salt have seized the bolts on solid, and there is no way I can remove it in my shed.
Bit gutted really. The things you expect to rot away like bumper supports, etc etc are absolutly fine. I didn't realise stainless on these rotted. The other one is absolutly fine.

Hi
The stainless cover around the manifolds itself being damaged is not an mot failure, as no exhaust gases are escaping.
The leading edge of the heat exchangers do get damaged if someone isn't careful when removing the toe eccentric bolt, causing it to rust quicker.
I would imagine that any exhaust place which makes custom exhaust would have the materials and welder required to weld a plate on for you, shouldn't cost too much either.

Cheers for that. Thats good to know and much appreciated. The stainless cover around the manifolds itself being damaged is not an mot failure, as no exhaust gases are escaping.

Lastly. Is it something that can be done whilst still on the car, (its rotton on the underside front edge) or do I need to remove it?
