Cayman Gen1 v Gen 2
Discussion
depends on the spec/Condition if you want PDK or not, waranty etc etc I could list loads of things
you can tune the 3.4 gen 1 cars to a nice level for little money also if that is of interest.
but then you can list engine issues, PCM models, car tax depending what age car you buy, in the end only you know

I had a loan 2.9 cayman for a week and it just felt very underpowered, the chassis had so much more to give and the engine would just run out of puff. I had a 3.4 boxster and that engine really was pretty decent, I had fitted a carnewal exhaust on it too so it sounded more like a gt3, although I always felt the chassis could always handle more power and the cayman due to it's stiffer structure could of course handle much more. I now have a 996 turbo but I still miss the 3.4 boxster and don't think I would have a problem with the pace of the car if I was to move into one again, but the 2.9 engine was just pathetic in the cayman loan car they gave me while the 996 turbo was in for some work imho

The 2.9 requires driving harder to get the best from it but it can be argued that this is more rewarding. The 3.4 has more grunt but raises questions as to the engine's reliability (not an issue with the 2.9).
It's hard to accept that any Porsche would have issues of engine unreliability. If I take the plunge it would have to be the 2.9 I think.

Gen2 2.9 Cayman's still have bore scoring issues:
