Morning all

I think it's time to consider a suspension refresh for my 964 (which IMO is as mint and original as they come). Just wanted to canvas some opinions on whether to get the original dampers reconditioned (is that possible), replaced with OEM or switch to aftermarket such as KWs and keep the originals in a box in the garage so that should I ever decide to part company it will still have all its original parts. Or is there another route to consider?

Any thoughts or musings gratefully received!

Cheers

If you want to keep the car standard then replace with originals. If you want a more sporting stance and more controlled ride then KW or Bilstien are probably the most popular.

Standard suspension always looks far too high, especially at the front IMHO.

Mine runs Bilstein HD's with H&R Greens (now bluey/purple I think?)
-could still go a smidgin lower at the front I think smile

Hi Simon. How's the fleet going ? With the RS Bilsteins, the rears can be rebuilt, but the fronts can't. I'm not sure if the same applies to the C2/4 items. Personally I wouldn't bother with the KWs, the suggestion of Bilstein HDs would be the way to go. Speak to Gert at Carnewal http://www.carnewal.com/
for prices, he's normally competitive and often up for a deal.

Really depends on what you are going to do about ride height and usage.

If you want it lower, say 20-30mm, then b8s are the best choice as they are not crashy on our roads with lowering springs.

If you keep original ride height, then b6s would be the best choice, but don't buy from Porsche since the Bilsteins that are supplied by Porsche are twin and not monotube. Furthermore buying from Bilstein (dealer etc) is cheaper and it is better quality.

If you are looking for something else Bilstein now do a kit approved by Walter Röhrl which is actually less money than pss10s for the 964.

We're in the same boat. I have a mint original 1990 964 too. The most important thing is what are you trying to achieve. I wanted max comfort and lowering. I have bought the KW V1 kit but not installed it just yet.

Here's a brain dump from my research. The spring rates have the biggest effect on ride comfort. Eibachs and Bilsteins are supposed to be comfortable. Eibachs have a reputation for breaking on the 964.

Watch out on H&R, red was bone hard and green the comfort version (still harder than Eibach), but H&R have changed their models so I'm not sure whats what.

Their was a change in the suspension design that you need to be aware of. It is highly likely that you have the "early" rear suspension, they changed the rear design to make space for the cab roof late in 90. Google will tell you how to work out if your car is early or late.

If you are going to do the suspension, its a good idea to re bush the lot whilst its apart and also deal with the gear linkage bushes whilst you are their (easy job).

Many thanks for the responses. I've been researching the various options presented since I posted and have narrowed it down to Bilsteins. I'm still angsting about which package to go for, but we'll get there soon!! I'll update after first drive with the new kit on. What with the bare respray and the suspension, she's been treated this year.

Hi Henry - all is good thanks. Went out in Bananaman today - simply sublime through the twisty stuff, but rather lively round sharp corners in the wet... Hope all is well with you and the mouthwatering stable of Pork!

Speak soon.

Cheers

Which H&R kit did you go for and where did you get it?
I've had a nightmare trying to get replacement camber adjustable top mounts for my club sport kit from H&R HQ in Germany as there is no UK supplier any more and apparently there are manufacturing issues? Thanks.

Just wanted to share news.....just had KW variant 3 fitted to my 1990 targa 4. Brief was to give me options through track days to soft holiday touring. OK it was an expensive option but had it done and full set up by JZM and have to say the brief has been met beyond my expectations .
Immediate impressions after fitting was that control and turn in vastly superior with smoother , quieter action (Note new mountings fit tied as part of the kit) ..a little more 'settling' at the rear on quick corners .
Now running on everyday with rebound damping three clicks softer than standard and compression damping standard. Car is set lower ride height ( just above RS) with equiv camber and 17 inch wheels. Rear springs were set ever-so-slightly softer than KW standard on JZM advice after listening to my brief
No worries about my vertebrae and tooth fillings any more and switching back to standard setting or more for a track day literally takes 5 mins and can be done without disturbing anything other the the engine lid catch and front boot carpet! And a side benefit for those of you with rattles - as a targa owner it's part of the 'experience' - much reduced as a result.

Many thanks to Steve and the guys at JZM for the advice and perfect execution

Roll on next summer for pain free French B roads!!!!

PS before the mod I was running standard shox and eibachs lowered at about the same height as this
