Just wondering where the needle on the temp gauge should be when the fans kick in?

Usually sits at the vertical position, (in the centre of the 0 of the 80), sometimes right at the end of the 0 when in traffic, but never higher.

Never really noticed the fans kick in, but then again, its never shown higher than mentioned above.

Anyone know?

The fans cut in at around the point of the 0, as in towards the end of '80' I always got a bit scared my 996 was getting hot because the gauge would lead you to believe it's @95 degrees.

The fans are pretty quiet in fairness and I can't really tell when mine come on, unless I listen very carefully.

Hope this helps.

The temp gage is too dampened to be of any use for this.

The radiator fans kick on when the temp reaches 100C (212F) and turn off when the temp drops to 96C (205F).

If the temp climbs to 102C (216F) the fans switch to high speed.

Or if you turn on the A/C the fans are switched on to at least low speed.

If you want get an OBD2/EOBD2 code reader/data viewer and monitor coolant temp in real time -- but not too closely, remember to watch the road! -- and if you are stopped somewhere quiet you can tell when the fans come on and then note the temp and note the gage's needle position. You can also tell when the fans turn off and note the temp.

BTW, the engine compartment fan comes on the engine compartment temp is 57C (135F).

(All numbers above are for my my 02 and 03 cars. There may be slight differences in other MYs.)

Sincerely,

Rockster.

Any recommendations for OBD2/EOBD2 code reader?

Actron is the brand I bought years ago. This has been a very nice OBD2 code reader/data viewer/logger for my needs.

Auto Xray is another brand I have laying around at the office though I have not used it nearly as often.

But the times I have used it it has been just fine.

There are probably other brands that are as good.

Be sure you consider ones that support all OBD2/EOBE2 protocols, including CAN 11/29-bit IDs and 250Kbs/500Kbs. (The former speed appears in UK/EU cars while the latter speed is used in USA cars.)

I would suggest -- but it will cost more -- a unit that has the ability to log/record data for a time (my Actron can only accumulate about 60 seconds worth of data) and the ability to transfer this data over a serial or USB link to a PC and into a program with which you can view the data later.

The Actron I have only supports viewing the seoond by second data 4 LCD lines at a time.

Sincerely,

Rockster.

What rockster said has actually put my mind at ease! I was in London today and in the kind of traffic jam that makes you want to punch your self in the face(!) i moved 2 miles in 2 hrs. Needless to say my 996 was hot, I thought a bit too hot but perhaps not.

From what I worked out, it was sitting at what I would say 95*c.

Great advice!

You can set the climate control to show coolant temp if you want to monitor it. Will try and dig the link out tomorrow as posting from the phone at the moment.
