I have just purchased a 993 varioram, my first Porsche, and wondered if anybody could tell me whether the oil pressure sounds OK. A Porsche buying guide I bought suggests it should be at least 2.5 bar when idling while the car's handbook suggests it ought to be 3.5 bar at 5,000 rpm. My gauge reads 1.5 to 2 bar when warm and idling but well over 3.5 bar at 5,000 rpm.

I've had 3 993s, one varioram and two non varioram. All three have had oil pressure between 4 and 5 bar (on the gauge, not independently verified) when above 2500 rpm.

Idle rpm pressure, in my experience, is usually always above 2 bar, but varies according to oil temperature and viscosity. I have always tried to stick to the Mobil 1 motorsport oil i.e. 15w50 rather than the watery 0w stuff - I'd expect the 0w oil to have a lower warm idle pressure.

Oil pressure at high revs should be totally dependent on the bypass spring, if it's low at 5000 rpm then it's probably worth looking at, esp. on an air/oil cooled motor!!! (then again, I'm no engineer and may be talking shite). There are plenty of proper engineers on this site to put me right

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear - it sounds like you've bought a pup and the engine will blow up at any minute!

(however, if I'm wrong and it's still running, I'll see you later for a quick spin )

Thank you for those words of wisdom GJM. The previous reply was a much more educated and informative response. Sorry I missed the spin - on family bbq duty. See you tomorrow

Many thanks Cyberface. The pressure is between 4 and 5 bar at 2500 rpm plus but seems to vary between 1.5 bar and 2.5 bar when idling. I have checked the oil which has been used and it is 0w40 and so hopefully this explains the discrepancy.
