I shall be treating myself to a weekend car and have decided on a budget of around £15K.
I have always admired the 911 but the car always seemed out of reach.
Yet after a look through the trader it seems that there are plenty of 70-80K mileage cars for sale at my budget price and below.
Will these cars just turn into a money pit? Or can a 10-12 year old 911 still be resonable to run?
I only intend to do about 2-3k miles a year so general running costs should not be too high. But is a 911 of this age about to need major works doing to it?
Will the servicing costs be extremely high due to age and mileage?

Are there models that should be avoided?

Thanks in advance

Which model are you looking, as at that price, there's a number of options? Have a look at the Hartech webite for a start, particularly regards to 996's. It could cost lots more than £15k in the long run.

Re the 996 at least you won't have the rust issues to deal with vs an earlier air cooled car.

And to some degree it's about your attitude to risk, surely it's not all 996 3.4s that are affected?

Might be better to go for the 3.6? Which will be in budget for £15k.

I'd go for it, the 911 is such a great car in any guise, after 5 years I still look back at mine on the walk to the petrol forecourt !

You need to keep a closer eye on the fuel gauge!

My answer to that is, go for it. Had my 1998 3.4 carrera 2 manual 996 for 6 months now and other than stuff I wanted to replace (IMS bearing, thermostat) it's been brilliant.

Mine has 108,000 miles on it now, 10k done by myself and I am starting to think I will never sell it.

I think that early 996's are attracting a new type of 911 buyer and have been for some time.

These buyers care not about lineage or funny headlights. They are coming from BMW's or S2000's etc and are seeing a 300bhp Porsche 911 for 10k!!!

I see it increasingly on here, with this type of question asked weekly. At this price level, the 996 is now competing with more marques than any 911 has before.

Thanks for all your input.
Out of interest what generally is the cost of servicing?
How much can you expect to pay for major works such as new clutch or new brakes?

Before I do make any decision I will check insurance costs. Although at the right age to insure the 911 (I am now 50!)I could not justify a huge insurance bill for the few miles the car will do.

First thing running cost, are you handy with a set of spanners if so it keeps the cost down.

Either way you drive you pay, is it a daily or a weekend car ?
Do you want a/c or water type 911 ?
A 3.2 Carrera is a good entry or a sc ? Plenty of those around, in your budget I would think.

Buy the best one you can find for your money, and have some left over for a big bill or two.

I would (and have) gone the aircooled route - mainly because if you can get one in good condition and keep it that way, and will have it a while, it will make you alot of money as they are only going up in value.

I'm utterly in love with my 996, got it close to what your budget is and its brilliant, I shopped around a LOT and saw just about every car I possibly could, also bought from a very well known dealer who is connected to a lot of people I really respect in Porsche Circles (Mike at Carerra Sports, Chris at Diablo, Paul at Parrs), also had a proper PPI done with a full report paid for by the dealer but done by an independent with the results of the report given straight to me which was great. Get one with stacks of history and realistic milage and hang out for the spec you want, they are out there!

I have owned my 996 3.4 for just over three years & love it to bits, it's not my daily driver now but was when I bought it. I had always wanted a 3.2 but couldn't see myself running it as a daily driver, especially over winter hence I bought a 996.

In your position of wanting a 911 as a weekend car, I'd probably look at aircooled cars, 3.0SC or 3.2 Carrera, maybe even a 964 if yoy can get a good one for £15k
Whatever 911 you end up with, it will be a 911 & it will be fantastic smile

I'd check the doorshuts of 996s too - I've seen some rot there....

Whilst not exactly the purist's choice - a 4WD convertible, this car struck me as excellent value for money advertised in the relatively safe confines of the Members for Sale section of the Porsche Club forum.

Looks like a genuine low mileage regularly maintained example. Not sure if the link will work automatically as you generally need to log in to the PCGB forum - you only need to give an email address though and can then get instant access, you don't have to join the club!

It's a 1999 Carrera 4 Convertible manual with 55k miles, matching hardtop, FSH, looks like Zenith Blue in the pictures, £10800.

I have no connection with the seller by the way.

Bought a 996 C2 3.4 three and a half years ago, bought at the top end of the prices then, but has been a good reliable car. In fact, only let us down once, see below.

If you're not keen on spannering then minor service at a specialist £3/400.

My wifes daily drive, about 5k a year. Be wary though, just had to shell out for new water pump , plus changing all four wishbones ( £250 a corner fitted. ), plus a couple of rear tyres.

That lot came to just over 2k.

Have been pleasantly suprised at how economical my '98 996 C4 has been to run, and how grippy it is around the twisty bits.

I need to change the front discs + pads and its looking like it'll cost me around £300 all-in.

That's not bad for the performance and smiles it delivers biggrin.

Thanks again for all the input.
Pistonheads really is a great place for genuine people.
Plus the idea of Porsche owners being a bit elitist is certainly not the case on here.
Thanks lads, could not ask for anymore.
