Seriously considering a Cayman
Discussion
Hi all, new to the forums but have been on many car forums in the past and still active on some!!
Let me tell you about my car history:- My first car was a Corsa B, then moved onto a Corsa C.
That was then sold after about 6 years of ownership to purchase a Honda Accord sport saloon which was a very nice car!
I was then offered a Lexus GS300 sport in gold which is a very rare car with the deep dish alloys on the rear. This is still in the family household and declared SORN currently for now to keep it in tip top condition (only done 90k since 1997).
I then went onto the estate version as I used it for mobile djing.....our family then bought a van for the business so this was not needed.....Sold and went onto purchase my current car...a 2002 Lexus IS300.
I have also had a F reg Vauxhall Senator on the way and a LS400 that was given to me from my next door neighbour!
So basically- running costs and fuel costs are familiar to me......!
Right so I am 30 years old in May, will have 5 years No claims and hopefully insurance will drop significantly for when I am 30 (already checked on moneysupermarket etc).
I went to see a Cayman on the weekend and I loved it, although it was not in great condition (had done 70k and had a rear wiper?!) it looks like something I could live with.
How many people have one? I am looking to get the 3.4s version as I think I would regret buying the 2.7!
I drive 15 miles a day return for work and my work is mostly based on me going around the UK therefore I get a hire car to use (instead of a company car) but have been using my Lexus for the mammoth trips as get 45p a mile.
The Cayman was OK to get in and out of and I only really go to the local shops on weekends for a small spot of shopping!
Any advice would be great!

On the face of things it would seem that a Cayman might not be the right vehicle for you.
A "couple of trips to the shops at weekends" will kill a Cayman, it's a car that needs regular spirited use over distance.
As for the 2.7 / 3.4 issue the insurance at 30 will be pretty expensive, I'm 39 and pay a grand a year with Porsche insurance for a 2.7 I've got one claim and an SP30 going against me.
Clearly the 2.7 engine isn't as gutsy as the 3.4 but, and it's a big but, it's proved to be the more reliable power plant with less by way of IMS and bore scoring issues (although to be fair the jury is still out in some respects)
If you're going to go for it, look for good history, general condition and mileage - in that order, if you can afford the £300 or so it'll cost, get a PPI. Avoid, like the plague, a car with missing or no history.
As a guide, and using an indy, you're looking at £200 - £300 for a minor service and £400 - £500 for a major depending on the additional service tasks needed at the time / mileage.
Try to find yourself a car from '06 onwards, they had some important engine revisions that are worth aiming for.
There's bags of info on the forum from some guys who really know what they're talking about, do plenty of research, you'll not go wrong spending some time reading.

Thank you for your reply.
I have access to other vehicles and would probably use the Cayman say twice a week to work!? then get the train on other days (I dont mind this and its cheaper to use the train etc)
On weekends it will either be garaged or used to visit friends etc so would not just be used to go the shops, I was sort of indicating what I do with my car now but I suppose a car like a Cayman cannot be driven just round the corner when I could really just walk! (and lose weight).
I am looking at a 2007 reg as this is what my budget allows and I have already looked into the Hartech service plan as it is not far from my house (around 20miles or so)
I have loved Porsches since a very young age and always dreamt of a 911, but hey, life is stages therefore I am going to bite the bullet and properly look into one!
The thing that did put me off a little was the front visibility....or was that because my chair was too low?!
As for insurance, I think it may be down to where you live as well? A 3.4 for me at 30 years old with 5 years no claims (so will be 29th May 2013) is £780 or so.......If it is £1000 this is also OK as paying almost £850 for my Lexus right now!
Heres a pic of the Porsche garage at Silverstone race circuit!
