So now having seen the reaction from a carload of adolescent highschool kids, what caused the flame?

I suspect oil leaking from a turbo bearing under high boost conditions.

Bloody hell! Hope the bloke keeps an extinguisher in the car - it didn't look like it was doing much for the paintwork on his back end!

Yep I reckon you're spot on with the oil from turbo bearings theory - if it was over injection of petrol then with a mixture that over-rich the engine would probably have stalled...

If that is the vid I think it is (can't open it, at work), a dark 3.2 turbo filmed by kids in a truck at night, then it's a 750+ bhp turbo'd 3.2 lump. I think the guy had just changed a load of stuff on the car and it had not been remapped, so flames were over fueling on lift off rather than oil...
