Discussion
I have now sold my 993 turbo to a very good friend of mine (with a very very big discount) and I am looking at buying something else. I am not interested in buying a 997 turbo etc. I am currently thinking of buying a 996 GT2 (I never drove one but what I read about these cars make me want to own one). My concern though is that these cars do not seem to sell (although resale is not a consideration as my plan is not to buy one and sell it in a few years time). For example, Cars at Malton have advertised one for a long time and the same for Strasse. There is one that looks very nice but has any one seen it ? Alternatively, I could buy a 964 turbo but I think it would be too raw for me. Is the 964 turbo very different from the 993 turbo ?

Thank you

Thank you
Do you mean 911 virgin ? I have checked on their website and I do not see that they are selling a 964 turbo. The only one that looks decent is the one that is being sold by JZM for a very good price. I think coming from a 993 turbo it would be too raw though hence my preference for the 996 gt2 that is advertised on Pistonheads.

Sorry, jzm, my mistake.I went through the same process, sold my 993 turbo that I had owned for 5 years and made the move to a 996 GT2. The 993 turbo is always going to be tough to follow from an ownership perspective as its such an accomplished package in performance and handling along with the build quality.
For me it was a simple choice though, there wasn't really any other 911 I was interested in for various reasons eg driving experience, depreciation and visual appearance.
The key with the GT2 is to find a good one, do your research and checks. They are a very special car. Faster than my 430bhp powerkit 993 turbo with a much lighter driving feel, the car comes alive once warmed up in a way the 993 never did. The car I ended up buying had been for sale on and off for over 18 months (castello car).
Set your budget, and start to view and drive some cars. The GT2 will not disappoint. 911 Virgin has a metallic blue GT2 owned by a forum member that is very straight for sale as I type this.

That particular silver MK1 car has been the topic of several discussions on here, although I don't think anyone actually has viewed it?
Have a read up on it, then take a look at the car in person and make an informed decision on it, on paper it has a great mileage and low owners with some nice upgrades albeit at the expense of originality but that doesn't make it a bad car imho. Have the body and paint checked out by a bodyshop if your aren't comfortable making a call on it yourself, that with an inspection will give you a good platform to make a buying decision on it. Cosmetic repairs are totally different to accident damage etc.
As always enjoy the search and do your homework :-)

Thank you all for the responses. I would like to check if someone has gone from a 993 turbo to a 964 turbo (3.3) and if so what was the impression. I really like the look of the 964 turbo but I like also the power of the 996 gt2. My heart at the minute goes to the 996 gt2.
I went from a 996 turbo,to a 993 turbo to a 964 turbo, currently got 996gt3rs....all very different cars...personally the 996turbo by far the most accomplished and easiest to drive very fast but probably the least desirable of all the cars...my least favourite was the 993turbo which lacked the usability of the 996 and didn't have the granite like feel of the 964 or the looks imo..I have also had a regular gt3mk2 and had use of a 996gt2...gt2 is undoubtably very fast but was a little disappointing when pushing on a bit as actually felt a little ungainly,it was an early model without the later suspension and to be fair was probably beyond my level of driving as much as the car...I sold the 964 turbo to buy the rs and tbh for the marginal difference in cost the rs imo is 100 times more enjoyable to drive, faster, and equally as rare so should hold it's value well from now...in your position depending on budget 996 gt3 or rs would be my choice.Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
