Morning all,

Does the 987 boxster (2.7) run on unleaded or superunleaded?

Thanks in advance.

Run it on the highest RON you can reasonably get. The ECU will learn and adjust to give optimal performance and better mpg on higher RON fuel. I run mine on Tesco Momentum which is 99. You wouldn't expect Usain Bolt to perform on a diet of Big Macs would you?

You can use 95 but the ECU will retard the ignition and reduce power output accordingly which in my opionion is a bit like eating a sweet with the wrapper on.

How does the engine know what octane petrol you are running?

Knock sensors detect pre-ignition.

My Porsche dealer showed me the hidden spec sheet for all new cars. It has the option of

REA51 - Midget & Bunsen burner in engine bay to test fuel octane rating....

My view is that all Porsches perform very slightly better on the higher octane fuel - so unless you're Scottish - you might as well put in the good stuff (Shell V-Power)! smile

Just to add to the confusion, my understanding is that 95RON has the higher calorific content (aka more potential energy - so potentially more power). However, it is more prone to detonation (bad thing!) so the timing gets retarded slightly. Actual loss of power is relatively small as the retardation and higher calorific content almost balance.

Yes there is a loss of power going to 95RON, but not as bad as most people think.
