I have a 2002 Carrera with PSE. Well, I have according to the spec sheet, it has the twin-twin style exhaust tips and the "noisy bugger" relay... although I don't notice much difference with the relay out as it always sounds good to me?!

Why do people always reference the C4S when raving about the PSE? scratchchin

Are there any differences?! I wouldn't have thought so given I thought the C4S additional spec was just the styling and wide arch, lower suspension, brakes (?) and 4WD. Am I right?

I believe you are right in that there is no difference between the C4S PSE and the Carrera PSE ( other than a different tail pipe route to suit the wider body). I am not sure why many people refer to the C4S when talking about the PSE, maybe because many of them have it fitted?

You can have either tip on 996.

There is no difference, but c4s owners love nothing more than to shoe horn into a conversation about anything the fact that they bought a c4s, I imagine this helps them forget the fact they bought the slower, heavier, numb feeling 996.

At least that's cleared up then. I thought I'd bought the inferior model losergetmecoat

I have the relay as well as the "tips", and option code XLF so unless its been replaced with a standard exhaust at some point I hope I have PSE. As I said i struggle I tell the difference with and without the relay plugged in, but maybe that's just me...

Should be a huge difference in sound, by relay you mean button? Is it unplugged?

They sound louder on C4S also they faster on track btw;)

I'm a newbie in the Porsche section so forgive me but my 2002 C2 has a sports exhaust but it has twin oval pipes and no obvious switch/relay to turn it on and off. Sounds fantastic. Is this a "PSE" or could it be an aftermarket? I have the option codes, does anyone know which one it would be? Cheers

Why do they sounds louder on a c4s, its the same engine, and same exhaust.

Fast on track? What track? What condition? What driver? Bit of a general statement that.

My comments were tongue on cheek, hence the winky face, but the c4s sports exhaust mumble that is spouted by owners does tickle me.

Easy tiger.

Not sure why.

Most track based on lap times, dont have 996 C4S any more. Glad you like your car;)

Oops, seems like Pandora's box has been opened... Again! smile

I have no button but have the relay (mentioned of various threads) which limits noise between 25 and 40mph I believe. I think the car sounds great but not 100% convinced I can tell the difference with and without the relay...

I have the relay. Made no difference whatsoever when I removed it. Then I noticed the resistor had been snipped.

All good.

Original factory fit would have button.

Not sure if without button you would still have plug. Perhaps the flap is stuck so is the same sound all the time as there should be a night and day difference.

If you don't have the button then I don't believe you have factory PSE??
As others have said the exhaust tip is not related to PSE.

On the Carrera vs 4S debate can anyone link to a youtube narrow body PSE so that we could compare the sounds?

Here is how my 4S with PSE sounds: Click to play never heard a narrow body car with PSE to compare would be interested to know if there is a difference in pipework?

Not all factory ones had a button apparently. I have the option code XLF on the spec sheet from Porsche but not on the sticker on the bonnet. Odd, I know, but confirmed he options with Porsche using the vin number. Seems to have loads of options so maybe there want enough space on the label?! No idea smile

Ill have the valve/flap looked at when next in for a service just in case it is stuck. I just hope it's not stuck closed!!!

Hmmm. I'm a little concerned now as I'm not sure mine sounds like that? It does sound bassy, but there is a growl to that video I don't appear to have frown

Anecdotally - I've never heard a 996 Carrera 2 or 4 sounds like a 4S with PSE. A 4S with PSE for me defines how a 911 should sound, yet with all of the 2's and 4's that I've seen and heard, none of them sounds like that.

I wouldn't be surprised if the 991 has been tuned to sound like it as it is very similar.

My 997 with PSE sounds good, but not at good as the 4S's with PSE I've heard.

Just to be clear - there is no science behind this post - it's just my observation!

To the right of PCM or the climate control there are 3 buttons - on mine its PSE top with a picture of a tailpipe middle is PSM off and bottom is rear wiper. In a 996 the button makes the zorst quieter in a 997 it makes it louder.
