Its just a shame that the Porsche magazines beat them to the story several years ago........
Has their journalist been in a coma since the last decade ?

problem will be the news will be out to joe public who have no idea on the issues or an understanding of them and depending how it is covered may affect the market place on new and used cars as all porsche engines will be perceived as prone to failure.

I think its fair to say that enthusiasts have known about these issues for a good while, and since non-enthusiasts probably don't purchase car mags anyway, they are likely to remain uninformed (hopefully).

If you think of an engine you believe (rightly or wrongly) is bulletproof, I will guarantee there will be a post on the internet somewhere referencing an issue with it.....

It would need to be a very slow news week to make the 'Nationals'.
The following week Joe Public would have forgotten all about it just like the usual (non-car related) media fads.

I count PDK in-compatibility as a design flaw wink

There is also that thread regarding RS4.0's lunching their engines.

i thought most porsche sold new and 2nd hand are bought by people ie joe public with a) too much cash and b) because of the 911 legend (reliability and racing pedigree)which only exsists in gt cars and they also cannot tell the difference between models.all the launch evenings i have attended most of the people i speak to have no idea what m96 stands for or what an ims does and whoes this guy hans mezger does he work in sales?

I think any prospective buyers will already know about the problems.

Even before my influence, my wife would always run her list of prospective new cars through google to find common faults and she's far from a petrolhead, although she's improving. smile

Every single car has them, although admittedly not as expensive to repair as a blown 98*/99* engine.

I think it will affect very little.

Road Runner, 5 HIT was in fact an actual Irish Reg of the 1970s. The number here stays with the car and when the car was no longer in use/scrapped the number like all our numbers died.

On balance (I own a 2007 Cayman S) I am pleased about this. Porsche have a reputation amongst the non-enthusiast for being ultra reliable and for having excellent build quality. So, since this is in a bit of a mainstream magazine, it may make Porsche take a little more notice of the issue.

It's similar to the BMW issue with key cloning. It was not until a little more press attention was given to the issue that they really did anything.
