So do I buy a 997 gt3 or get another 996 gt3 and save £20k?

I have money in the bank and time off work, nothing other to do than look for another car then!! my 996 gt3 got stolen and written off earlier in the year and its now time to get another car.
I love the look of the 997 GT3's but worry they are still going to loss £5 plus k per year with ease? They are also £20k more than a sorted 996 gt3..The 997 clubsport I wanted and was going to close a deal on tomorrow it now seems may have a murky past.. Is it therefore better to stick with the 996 gt3 and get a real nice one such as the red one at rpm? or yellow one at dovecourt? subject to a wright tune check over?
any ideas as its doing my head in now... even thought about a 996 rs at JZM. The way I see it is that the RS and even the 996 gt3 were made in a lot less numbers than the 997, do you think they are at the point now of holding value? I had a 993 for over a year and a half, just sold it and lost £1000 in that time....

I too have a feeling the 997 will dip sub £40 in a couple of years max, big hit to take.. though what a nice looking car, I will need finance to buy one so it is a double hit really. I think I will just get another 996 GT3, I really don't do that many miles a year in my cars so it makes the most sense. I just hope the Dove house one does have aircon as per the ad as I do like the look of that one... keen on the red one at rpm too. My old gt3 was silver and so want to get a different colour.

I'd say it depends on what you want the car for. If you really do want to go tracking it and going as fast as you can then surely the 997 is the best bet. If you are looking for something special but not so fussed on the track then the 996 will probably hit the mark and save you a whole load of cash.
Yes I see your point, its more just for letting of steam from work and driving to our house in France .. Gt2 would probably suit the latter but I prefer the look of the gt3.
I am a bit of a tart though, I like the idea of the newer model but not the cost!! easy to get carried away with these things and panic later on!

I went through a similar thought process myself earlier in the year except the choices were a 996TT or 997TT. I ended up deciding the difference in price just was not worth it for me as it's a second car. I haven't regretted my choice for one minute and know I can upgrade to a newer car another day if I want to

I can only speak as a polisher of these cars 
But the yellow Dove House car won't have air con.This picture of it's engine bay shows no air con pipes routed to an air con compressor :
Whereas in this picture they're clearly visible and I've highlighted them with a red marker :
The Dove House cars heater control also indicate it has no air con (or manual air con rather than automatic climate control) but on the basis of the lack of compressor, I suspect it has none whatsoever.

I'm surprised that nobody has contradicted you on this yet. With its passive suspension and small difference in performance the 996 is often regarded as the better track car.lucky no 7 said:

If you're concerned about depreciation hen stay away from a 997 GT3 for now. I'm sure it's a buyers market at the moment so could probably do a good deal on any cars for sale. For your needs, I'd suggest a 996 and buy on condition, rather than history/ mileage. Get a proper PPI too and then go and have some fun I love the look of the 997 GT3's but worry they are still going to loss £5 plus k per year with ease? By the sound of it, you still have unfinished business with the 996 GT3, as it takes a year or 2 to learn how to get the best out of them
