Service due / check engine light on?!

Got the ol' Boxster booked in for service soon and the check engine light just came on. Now this seemed to co-incide with the car going into the overdue on service dash display?
Would the service being overdue cause the check engine light to come on as that seems odd.
Any ideas chaps? Probably yet another fault has developed!?

check light comes on for multiple reasons, whilst in for service they'll connect scanner and tell you.
