New edition of EVO landed on my doormat Saturday - couple of 911 related things:

1. Reminiscing on the dying type of performance car, i.e. NA and not too much electronics - 997 GT3, M3, Clio 200
2. 991 4S article - basically says it's the best version of the 991 and helps to overcome some of the issues with the steering they've commented on before - in a beautiful blue also.

Haven't read it properly yet - don't quite get why people are negative about EVO lately, still the best mag on the shelves by a long long way.

I have also yet to read the article, but agree that it is one of the best car magazines available.

why would 4wd improve the steering ? Surely since the 4wd is not active most of the time it should be no different ? If anything the steering should be worse as it is being corrupted by the power when the power is trasmitted to the front wheels.?
Alternativley evo were wrong in the first place ?

Might have changed the steering system in another way. The 991 C2 wasn't right, trust me.

Yes they've gone back to ....(hydraulics?)....oh i wish.

Could be that the 18 months into the 991 lifecycle the C4S is the first to receive updates to the electric steering? (just speculation on my side)

I thought that could be a reason as well, there is also of course more weight over the front wheels and I'm sure a host of other small differences that could contribute.

Whatever the reason, they pretty much call it the best 991 yet.

Have read it now and it's a great article with some tantalising information about the history or Porsche in Austria and the description of roads that I would love to visit.

It does not. They just updated the firmware on electronic steering feel generator.

In my non PDCC 991 2S the steering whilst not the very best is nowhere near as bad as the many reviews indicate.

Heard will be 3 second quicker around nurburgring, could be as on 997 was 2 seconds quicker.

Weight and different software programme will give different steering feel.

Yep what I'm thinking too, by the sounds of things.

Given it is electronic - I wonder if it can be retrofitted!!

Why ? I have driven 3 991s and I had no issue with the steering ,a bit less feel than previous 911s but it gives the car more composure as you are not constantly adjusting to keep the car straight on less than perfect roads.I can appreciate to some that reduces the 911ness ,but having owned a 997c2s and 997turbo I thought the 991 pisses on them frankly overall.
I can't recall any article mentioning the c4 having a different or updated steering system .
I just feel a bit sceptical about the evo write ups ,I just get the impression when I read them they made their minds up before driving the car ,now with everyone else lauding the car they are trying to claw back some credibility ?

Love the Clio RS 200s - one of my all time favourite cars. But, don't think it has electric steering, just 'electrical assistance' on the power steering, which works superbly.

Speaking of electric steering, my 207 has this and there's a nasty side effect (it's basically perfectly ok on a 207 99% of the time). Under hard cornering, for example quite a bit of the 'ring and for another example the M11/M25W sliproad (where it's been reported to me by the driver at the time apparently doing 100 or something!), it's like the steering doesn't have enough power to work right and the steering becomes unassisted and you really need to muscle the wheel to get it to turn.

Presumably they have a decent powered pump on a 911 but has anyone found this on proper high speed/hard cornering?

Pump?

The 991 has electro-mechanical steering.

So this is my poor engineering knowledge coming to light. I assumed it was a hydraulic pump but powered from an electric motor instead of belt driven. I'll just nip over to wikipedia or something and come back later with some education wink

I found weird things on my old 130i - whilst cornering you would feel it 'thinking' - difficult to describe, but the level of assistance would vary noticeably in only a few small degrees and then go back to what it was in the first place.

Anyway, the Porsche system is different to most others as I understand it - so would reckon they have engineered these types of issues out.
