Hypothetical question ....... Assuming you are sitting behind some traffic on an A road at say 40mph and want a quick overtake, what would be fastest method, selecting the correct gear using paddles ( 2nd ?) and flooring it or just floor it in auto mode ?

The 'correct' method would be to dip the clutch with your left foot, select the gear and blip the throttle with your right foot before releasing the clutch for a smooth change wink

In auto, Stamp on throttle very quickly and let go. Gears will drop and ready for overtake.

So the time it takes PDK to drop from say 5th to 2nd you are not any quicker pre selecting 2nd prior to the overtake ?

Would need to test but reckon stamping on the throttle may well be quickest if you are driving in auto mode.

This works for me, stamp and release when you see the opportunity arising then you will be in the optimum gear to just squeeze the throttle when the actual gap appears. It's what the instructor at the PEC recommended to me.

In you sinario, auto is better plus there's no chance of over revving.

Turbo S in Sport mode. See gap, don't touch paddles, press accelerator, utter involuntary expletive, watch other car shrink rapidly in mirror, BRAKE before authority figure notices. smile

You can't over-rev a PDK 'box.

A short dab on the throttle is enough to kick it from 6/7 into 3/4 which it will hold for 10 secs each. Stamping on the throttle is definitely the slower option as the gearbox has gone to sleep if you've been pootling prior to the need to overtake or get out at juncs / roundabouts.

Always quicker to pre-select. If you do, the car just accelerates immediately when you hit the throttle. If you don't, the car scratches its chin, asks the computer WTF to do, waits for the computer to get back from its lunch break, waits whilst the computer tells the gearbox to drop 4 cogs, waits for the hydraulics to wake-up and make the changes and only then, finally, gets on the gas! biggrin

So the quickest possible way to overtake w/PDK is be in Sport Plus (for fastest changes) and driving in manual mode, make sure you're in the right gear (which you will be due to your intelligent anticipation of road & traffic conditions, surely? smile ) then nail the throttle into kickdown. The kickdown overrides the manual setting on the 'box and automatically changes-up for you at the red line (quite violently in Sport Plus) until you release the kickdown switch again. Once it's released you are back in normal 'manual mode' (i.e. the engine will bounce off the rev limiter until you pull the paddle for an upshift).

No. Hitting the LIMITER (the clue is in the name!!) isn't an over-rev. You also can't 'money-shift' a PDK. If you try to change down to a gear that would cause the engine to exceeed the max. permitted rpm, the computer refuses the request to change.

I don't know if the theoretical way to over-rev a Tiptronic (put it in e.g. second, then go down a VERY, VERY steep hill until gravity causes the car to exceed the max permitted rpm) is still valid for the PDK 'box, or whether the PDK will change-up even when gravity, not engine power, is causing the rpm to rise. The reason I don't know is I'm not quite daft enough to try it!

Slightly more comfortable for the passenger if you shift manually before you accelerate. If the time difference between auto and manual is relevant, then the overtake probably isn't on.
