Just thought I would post this as I finally managed to get it fixed and it was plaguing me for over a year.

Car - 98/99 996 c2 cab

Symptom

Either;

1) Set the alarm and car beeps at you but doors lock - noted that interior light comes on but then goes off a few secs later

or

2) Set the alarm and car beeps at you but doors lock - a short while later the alarm goes off and keeps going off at random intervals

The latter symptom was a more recent development so I took it to get it looked into a few times before the cause was identified - initially i just put up with it.

Fix

The car is a cabriolet (not sure if this is different on the coupes) and the centre console hinge was broken. There is apparently some sort of microchip / switch mechanism in here and sets off the alarm. I assume this is in case someone reaches in and tries to nick something out of it so unsure if this also applies to the coupe.

Temp fix

Always make sure you close the centre console when locking the car even though hinge is broke - you will immediately notice it no longer beeps!

It was bloody annoying! I actually spent over a year pretending that each time it happened when out in public that it had never happened before or would pretend to onlookers that it was someone else beeping at another car on the road!

All Porsche alarms beep at you and don't set if any lid or cubby is not shut properly.
Certainly does it if the front lid or glove box is not shut right or a door. The centre console one may be cab only though

OP, I thought your's would have gone 'Ping' when locking, anyway my alarm used to also go off if I left my mobile in the center compartment so had to set the phone not to vibrate. Maybe I had a dicky hinge too.

Porsche have made a metal hinge repair kit for the centre console cubby for ages. Part Number 996.552.960.01 (£17.02 +VAT)

It is one of the things I mention at handover, you'd notice if you'd left a door or the luggage compartment open, but not necessarily the centre cubby.

Thanks for sharing - but if you asked on here we would have saved you a year of irritation as it's very common!!!
