Theoretical question.

You've got about 50k to choose a 911 to do a road trip to Istanbul and back, taking in the best roads of the countries inbetween. Over 4000 miles, lots of long distances but then no shortage of twisty stuff either including the Pyrenees and the Tranfagarasan/Transalpina.

What would you buy and why ? 997s, 997 turbo, 96 Gt3, 96 turbo X50, 96 GT2 etc.. ?

Only criteria is that it shouldn't depreciate very much and obviously it needs to be reliable !

I would rule out any GT variant of these cars.
Not that it was not great to drive the Alps this summer in it, there are just some things that type of car can not do, on a twisty alpine/mountain road.

Might want to leave out any wide body version on account of narrownes of roads.

For me, I think a convertible 997 C2 with PSE or similar style switchable exhaust would be the perfect choice for such a trip.

If you're going to do long distances, you need a left hooker and two wheel drive with the long range fuel tank option - no idea if that was available on road legal cars. The long range tank is not available on right hand drive or 4wd as it won't fit.

Range wise with the standard tank, a Turbo will give you around 300 miles per tank if you're being sensible - if you're on boost, you'll get less. A NA car will give you about 350 miles.

Much as I love my Turbo, a vanilla 996 or 997 (with a big fuel tank if available) would be the car of choice for me.

OP, are you keeping the car when you get back, or selling it? I wonder if you should choose a car on the strength of a fortnight's drive to anywhere.

Oh, hang on. The question is theoretical.....smile

997 Turbo for me, very relaxed for long stints, 4wd in case the mountain passes are snowy, enough fun when it gets twisty. An allrounder.

Id go for something older and air cooled, which will run on low octane petrol...

^ Yup. ...... I really would recommend one but also with aircon. Later one 964 or 993, the aircon is still pretty poor but 10 times better than the earlier ones. Mine did manage to keep me pretty cool in temps of 100 degrees last summer whilst abroad.

I'm inclined to agree. A bit of comfort, massive speed, happy munching up 500 miles in one mouthful and still fun on the back roads.

suspension on 6 would be tiresome compared to 7 after many hours

Well it would it be down to fuel economy?

Either the Turbo or C4s for me, but coupe.

fuel economy ? you're joking surely .... roadtrip trip of a lifetime, you're not going to let it be dominated by saving a few hundred quid on fuel (unless you're skint or some sort of strange spreadsheet mpg nerd ?)

wise choice...

capable of 6000 faultless miles in 19 days.. lack of rear tyre tread does diminish though!

From experience; Anything with good ground clearance and runs on 95 RON fuel. Thus, definitely not GT2 unless you have the ride height increased beforehand.

997S.2 - with PDK (even though I normally hate it). Plenty quick enough, plenty of ground clearance/wheel travel, supple ride in 'Normal' mode, bullet-proof engine, auto or manual(ish) depending on conditions, 2WD/larger front boot, narrow body, very economical when cruising in 7th, 185mph if you're in a hurry, great handling and grip. What's not to like?

Fuel economy in this case is not about money. It's about availability, hence range. At the very least you'll go a lot further between stops.

I'd be very surprised if a 997 Turbo could munch 500 miles in one go. Two goes, maybe. wink
