My 968 coupe passenger door has decided it no longer wants to open so I need to take out the door insert to have a look. Is this something I could do myself (dont usually do anything on my cars, without ruining the door card/fit or should I get it done by someone in the know.

It can be easily done, with the door open! Seat is in the way closed.......

However if your not used to taking thing apart you can do some damage.

Is there any one around with some experience?

Is the external finger lever sticking in the handle?

If so use a small screwdriver from the bottom, lever the lever (!) carefully into normal position, then squirt WD40 in to the area and work the lever back and forth.

Or - is the locking button not working, using the key in the lock may help, again with some WD40.

Can be a small £2 clip from the motor to the locking mechanism.

Can give me a call 07811944953 in the morning.

Mike

Only need a screwdriver, its held on by a combination of screws (lots!) and push in clips.

Forgot to say that it is possible the roll lever that turns the motion of the door handle lever round to actuate the release may have broken due to age. Do you find the handle is just floppy? Mine on the drivers side broke. Very cheap part but a total and utter PITA to replace.

Yup - But try and get at them with the door shut!

From the original post its difficult to be sure whether the door will actually open.

Im going to guess that it will, from the inside, because external handle failure is common, but to not be able to open the door from either side is seldom heard of.

If its the latter than I think that you will have to sacrifice the door card, because even after youve removed the seat (six socket headed bolts) youll still struggle to remove it without damage.

Good points guys. I reckon though that even in the unheard of case of the inner handle being inoperable you could bend the card back enough to operate the latch release i.e. remove all the screws/clips you can get at.

Still though it sounded to me from the OPs post that the same parts in the handle broke as happened to me and has happened to many ppl, I am sure some guys like those fiddly horrible jobs but its exactly the sort of things on cars I hate doing.

Great input thanks guys and no the door wont open from the inside or outside. The trigger on the door handle isnt floppy but when you I try and use it it moves but feels tight, same for the internal handle ! So problem number 1 is getting the door open I guess.

I dont think that it can be done. I have typed and deleted seat removal instructions, but I cant see how the door card can be removed, even if you dont have speakers in the door bins (which you will unless its a CS/S).

The best thing to do, I think, is to try to find a good replacement door card and then, referring to a picture of a bare door inner, bite the bullet and cut through to gain access to the lock. Removing the seat will be helpful so: push it all the way back and youll see one cap headed bolt on either side, then move it to the fore and youll see a pair on either side. Itll be easier with someone helping through the NS window and dont forget the electrical connector.

Or get a vehicle locksmith to try and open it, I know it can be done but will not say how on the internet, took the guy seconds once he figured it out. I still reckon the OP or an experienced mechanic could take all the accessible screws/clips out away from the door inner skin, unscrew/unbolt the arm rest and then be able to bend the card back enough to get at the latch. Done carefully one may get away without destroying the door card and I would at least try that before cutting the thing out.

Its the part of the door card trapped at the leading edge of the door that will prevent it, I think.

If it gets sore, you know you didn't use enough lube! ;-)
