Morning all, having been away from Porsche ownership (and this forum!) for about 3 years or so, I'm contemplating getting a 911 to run as a daily drive (well, once or twice a week drive for commuting, shops, odd weekend blast) in the next couple of months as my current daily Mini Cooper S will be going to my gf. <-- actually, that last bit is basically b
ks, we/she don't really need another car, I just fancy another Porsche but we need to keep the Mini as she'll have just passed her test and I don't think she'll be insurable on a 911....anyway that's how I'm justifying it all
997s are too much money for a 3rd car, I've had a 996 already, 993s are also too much. This leaves 964s which is handy as I think they're prettier than all the previously mentioned ones
Ideally I'd like a C2 Coupe I think, preferably with an engine rebuild done (they all seem to require one at 120k miles
).
Can someone point/link me in the direction of a good resource regarding buying/mechanical guides? I've had a search on PH, but can't seem to find anything (I may just be pants at searching) apart from this one from 2002?? http://www.pistonheads.com/porsche/default.asp?sto...
Also, if anyone is looking at selling theirs in the next couple of months, do get in touch. The red one at Specialist Cars of Malton looks perfect but I doubt it'll be around when I'll be looking

I'm pretty sure a decent 964 would be high mileage 993 kind of money now. Personally I'm not a big fan of SCOM ..... You can get a car just as good for less money somewhere else IMO.

If I was going down the 964 route, there is only one place I'd be going, and that's to Adrian Crawford in Cornwall. Not cheap, but sure knows his aircooled Porsche, and an extremely nice chap to boot. He knows just where to look for the biggest cost of a 964 is now ........ Where the rust will be.
I believe the red one at SCOM has already sold. A C2 in the spec you want will likely be £20K+. So not too far off 993 prices in reality.
Most of the 'issues' that affected 964s in the early years will have been attended to on any cars left now. i.e. vent kit to distributor will have been fitted, head gasket(less) problem sorted out and dodgy dual mass flywheel replaced. So that leaves you to check for rust problems (which have become more and more prevalent over recent years), what state the suspension is in, water ingress caused by tired/hard seals, corroded engine tins and a host of other age related things. Basically, to get a good one your looking for previous owners to have spent a significant amount on upkeep over the last five years.
A good one is a real pleasure to drive and own. A bad one is a money pit....but can be turned into a good one if you're prepared to keep it and spend the money.

Okay, so I have very little impulse control: I put a deposit on the 993 C2 Cab at 911 Virgin tonight
Ideally I would have liked a 964, but after looking at prices, availability and the fact that the car will live mainly outside (at least for the next few months), I decided that a 993 was prob the better choice and the one at 911V was at the perfect price point. Compared to a couple of 993s I saw a couple of years ago at the same price point, I was very impressed. Hopefully picking her up on Saturday all being well, now I just need to find a sports exhaust for her....

A few snaps after picking her up last night
Will try and get some better ones in the next few days when it's not raining/snowing! I love how she drives, steering feel is fab, she rides very well even around town and engine is something else: the pick up is great and it loves to rev. It reminds me a bit of my old 355 - it's got enough mid range for regular work, but encourages you to use revs if you want to go quickly
And when I'm doing about twice as many gear changes as I need to purely for fun, I always know it's a good sign!. All in all, for a 20 year old car with 110k miles, I'm in awe so far. Oh, and I've named her Phoebe
- I name every car I own

I love her bum

). I often crack the window just to listen so I would thin they're perfect for a cab.
