In simple terms, They wrap around the exhaust to heat air that is then blown forward into the passanger compartment when the heater is turned on. That's why you never want to contaminate them with oil.....

In more complicated terms, get shot and buy Damart. Wish I'd opted for the heat-exchanger-less version when I upgraded to a B&B triflo.

In 911 speak, heat exchanger = exhaust manifold. So called because in the absence of water in the air cooled cars they provide the heat for the heater system. They are normal tubular manifolds, but are boxed into an outer skin. Air is pushed though the space between the manifold and the outer skin, gets very hot, and is pumped into the cabin if you have the heater switched on. Pain in the neck because the outer skin can rot over time letting the heat escape, and you have no heater. You then have to replace half your exhaust system to make your heater work.

But very efficient -almost instant hot air after start up, unlike a water cooled vehicle where you have to wait for the water to warm up.
