Something Different - Spaceframe, Audi 5-Cyl, 996

Well, this is a little different but very cool, IMHO:

I've just finished reading the whole build thread on the original, Swedish site.
I get the impression that it is being built for a specific series where there is a power to weight ratio regulation... A bit like some of the Elise race series.
From memory, I think he reckons the car will be aroun 1 tonne and he could have 230bhp or something like that, hence why he has a bit of a 'random' engine.
I guess having a turbo engine means you can have more power and torque earlier in the rev range?! (I didn't read every post on the 47 pages in detail - LOL)
So, it's not a street car but a pure race car, so I guess something like the one I built wouldn't 'do'.
It's not the body or engine I would choose but I absolutely love this project, for some reason.
It does look a little wide but the welding and some of the details, such as the suspension joints, are just beautiful and I can't wait to see it finished.
He looks to have been building for a few years now, so the finished product might be some way off, sadly

some incredible attention to detail in the welding and some of the suspension components look like they have had hours of machining.
It does look a little over engineered and possibly a bit heavy, especially externally of the 2 bulkheads. I think 1 ton is a bit optimistic, especially if keeping the steel body.
I spend all day in front of a CAD machine designing cars, so its really nice to see someone try and do it using drawings, spirit levels and cardboard cut outs. proper engineering.

I can see where you guys are coming from but I think I read that the doors and bonnet were GRP/ CFRP (maybe Cup) items and I don't know what he is doing with the rest... I guess a lot can be cut away and we're yet to see what he does with the body as he appears to pretty much using it as a template, at the moment, for the chassis.
Either way, it's just a lovely piece of 'traditional' engineering and you rarely come across quality welding like that.
I'm a little disappointed with the engine choice (the new Audi TT RS engine would have been better if you are going turbo 5) but I guess there isn't much else you'd want in there from Porsche unless you find an early non-DI 4.5 V8 Cayenne engine? Although you could do something nice with a 928 V8, I am sure. But, on the basis that there is some sort of power:weight restriction (I think) I guess something small-ish capacity and turbocharged is the way forward?!

I just `picture read` the whole 47 pages as I dont read Swedish
That is some design, engineering and welding feat so far. I was hoping that it may have arrive at some of the cosmetic side by the end of the thread but it looks some way off...
Amazing work all the same, big respect to the man.

great project! if they cut enough of the steel body away it sounds to light too most to be1000kg but with that engine it could be possible. my semi spaceframe cayman kept to much steel (at the minute anyway)-roof, rear quarters, inner and outer sills and part of the front flitches. has 12 and 13inch wheels huge heavy cup fr brakes all round and the big twin turbo motor and weighs 1120kg. i think if the 996 guy uses plenty of carbon he will get down to 1000-1050 easily. cant wait to have a proper look at it on a laptop instead of my phone. good too see im not the only nutter out there!

I was thinking of your car whilst reading that... Wonder how it 'behaves' with the mid-engine configuration on a shorter wheelbase?Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
