Chasing the Porsche dream :)
Discussion
Hi chaps
I'm a bit of a lurker on the Porsche forum - very jealous of all of you
Just a bit of advice if possible.
I am a big BMW M car fan and last year achieved what seemed like an impossible dream a few years ago and bought a low mileage mint top spec e46 M3 CS. As always you then want more although the CS is an awesome machine and I have loved every minute of owning it after going in a 997 GT3 and Henrik's 996 9e25 monster at VMAX Carbon last year I've been well and truly bitten by the damn Porsche bug. The GT3 handling was just mind blowing along with incredible sound from the full Akrapovic system. I've always loved the GT Porsche's and the 997 GT3 and GT2 are just the ultimate in my opinion.
Basically what I'm after is an idea of what monthly repayments and depreciation I'd be looking at on a 50 - 55k GT3 or GT2? Porsche warranty is a must (I assume it works in a similar way to BMW UAC warranty). I'd be looking to own the car for around a year. It has to be a GT3 / GT2 as I'm really not interested in comfort or all round ability, I want something that's raw, brutal and minimal compromise apart from reliability. 996 cars I know are more raw than 997 but I'd be worried about the costs and reliability.
I saved hard for over 4 years and paid cash for the M3 and never ever want to do it again it nearly killed me life's too short. I'd be looking at a finance package with around a 10k deposit. I am hoping that despite living in Cornwall where wages are comparably very low I can still make this happen in the next two years
I'm 28 years old so I figure now is the time to do it before the girlfriend (24) gets any ideas about having kids!
If the man maths work out then it's on to the GT2 or GT3 decision. I sway between the two on a weekly basis but what a fantastic decision to have to make.
Any help / advice would be very much appreciated.
James

Have u done a search for finance deals and called a few for some quotes on what they can offer? I think if you put £10k down and got a reasonable lease with a balloon payment you could keep the mthly payments in the £400-600 range. Depends on your own personal circumstances etc. Key is really whether you earn enough to pay for it as well as the maintenance, insurance, tax etc. you only live once so if you can why not.

Just to confirm,is it £10k in total you're looking to put in? Welcome to the Porsche room by the way. I'm 28 too and been a GT3 owner for just over a month now - never selling it!
Yes around 10k if that's realistic. Very jealous on the 996 I bet it is epic to drive.

I haven't to be honest I thought I'd ask you guys first. £400 - £600! That's definitely well within the budget. I'm lucky enough to have a good job along with my own IT business so for down here earn pretty good money albeit working 60 hours a week!I'd be interested if anyone has come from an e46 M3 into a GT3 / GT2 in respect of running costs. I haven't had a problem running the CS. Fuel consumption I'm really not bothered about unless its down into single figure average but I doubt that's the case with a flat 6? I appreciate that these are 100k+ cars when new as a result the running costs will be high. However it will be a weekend car with the odd run into work if morale is low

All in if I could realistically make it happen for 1k a month then I think it just has to be done

Does that mean you are a powerfully built company director? You'll fit right in here
I came from a M3; cost me a fortune in problematic faults, ended up selling back to a dealer because I got sick of it. Never buying a BMW again!
Welcome to PH Porkland
One thing to consider, at that price level, if you're buying a main dealer car then trading into something else in a years time, your hard earned £10k will be gone plus your monthly payments.
Today at £55k will be £40-45k trade in next year. Trade bids are already in this region so step carefully.
However if you can do it, go for it. Might make sense to keep one for a bit longer though - not exactly a hardship by any stretch

Only 10-15k in a year? Very optimistic starting at £55k.

Fingers crossed my CS has been faultless. I did buy top end of the market though and i have comprehensive warranty so hopefully i wont have any unexpected costs.
Thanks for all the info chaps this is looking really doable.
As for the wait its a long story but unfortunately my last relationship went tits up and as a result ive had to sell my house. So new house required first!
So Gt2 or Gt3?

The two 996 GT2s at 911 virgin would be worth a look. Should be minimal depreciation at current prices but they seem to stick around a bit.
I do love the idea of a fully untamed beast 996 GT2 but after doing quite a bit of research it sounded like they were a bit off in the handling department although I understand this is quite easy to rectify with a bit of tweaking?keep it lit said:

^^^^^ what he said and if you want raw stick RS on after the 3

This is what half of my brain is saying. The other side is saying brutal straight line grunt. I know the GT3 is on a totally different level to my CS but it's still the same principle i.e. the engine comes alive at 4k rpm. Whereas I'd imagine the GT2 is hold on for dear life from 2k
g
Hopefully at the next VMAX I can get a ride in a GT2 and then I'll be in a better position to make a decision.I think the 3 RS is out of the price range and I do prefer the look of the normal GT3 although I know the RS is another step up again which seems pretty impossible after being in a GT3.
Thanks for all your help chaps much appreciated.
Off to get some real quotes and do some more sums. Hopefully one day in the not too distant future I'll be joining the club
