Hi all,
Just recently bought a 996 Turbo and am loving it. Unlike most of the UK, up here in Scotland we dont have any snow so have been using it all last week. What a fantastic machine, I've had boxsters and caymans in the past but this is a bit special. My only issue is that it has a performance exhaust which is too loud for me so I am going to have the standard system refitted. Will I be disappointed? will it be too stealthy? I prefer a car to be quiet nowadays and hate the noise from the boy racer cars. Any opinions from owners on here.

Glad your loving your turbo, I think they are great cars. I've had mine 18 months now and it never fails to put a smile on my face.
The standard exhaust I found to be too quiet for a supercar, so went for a milltek system which I think is a nice compromise.
Enjoy it!!

Welcome & pics please! wink

Is your sports exhaust dashboard switchable? I personally would not remove the exhaust - if you don't have a switch, you may be better having one retro-fitted perhaps. If and when you come to re-sell, the sports exhaust will be a big draw!

Anyone, stop reading and go out and enjoy! smile

Me too, I also went the Milltek (100 cel cats)route, with a remap! Standard exhaust definitely too quite but might suit OP if he likes em that way.

Looks the biz, i used to own a Black one with the aerokit, prefer them standard though these days.
Not sure on the exhaust thing, mine is standard and sounds sweet on song albeit i would prefer it a little louder sometimes.

Sweet ride, congrats.

Best color too. Mine is a turbo S and came with a very loud exhaust which I have removed as I was running the risk of becoming deaf. It is very uncomfortable on the inside and lost about 20 bhp by removing it according to the previous owner.

keep the exhaust on no question whatsoever!!!!! unless you use the car for daily long motorways. i have a fabspeed supersport on mine which has to be the most agressive sounding zorst on a 996t (maybe there are others?) i took it off for a recent 1200 mile jaunt for the ring and stuttgart, standard sounds sort of golf gti sweet on song but no more, and around town when you want to blip the throttle to remind you and the surrounding boy racers whos the daddy smile then the standard exhaust just isnt right!

so theres my 2 pennys worth, as soon as we got back i had my fabspeed put back on! my car has a stage 2 upgrade from 9 excellence, and its pretty quick. love my 996 turbo and delighted that there seems to be loads of positive interest in them recently, heres hoping this 911 turbo wont buck the trend of ever appreciating 911 turbos.

Thanks all for the welcome and your comments, my son has also been driving the car and at 24yrs old loves the sound from the exhaust so we are now arguing about putting it back to standard. Think I might need to pull rank on this one!!

dont do it!! Do you know what system is on there? They sound soo wrong on standard systems! Mine is very agressive but a miltek for example is much more usable.

Don't think I can live with it, taking the pleasure of driving the car away from me! Had a miltek on a golf r32 I owned in the past and hated it, must be getting too old now.

When I bought my 2002 x50 it had a zorst by Eisennman. . . . just loud, not loud nice, just LOUD. Demanded & got a standard exhaust before buying, never looked back.

Standard is loud (well loud including the engine) when you are giving it grief, and sounds nice & burbly on a cold start in the garage. Rest of the time it is indeed fairly muted, but in any case, you can't make a 996turbo sound like a normally aspirated car, so with many turbo "sports exhausts" it only ends up sounding farty/boomy. Having said all that, I have listened to videos of 996turbos/gt2's fitted with Tubi exhausts, which sounded really nice when accelerating, don't know how good it would/wouldn't sound on a long run though.

Go and try a standard one to compare. Only way you will know for sure.

IMO standard is best way to go.

Welcome to the club mate, great choice in car thumbup

Had mine just gone 3 years and still absolutely love it.

I'm still on a standard exhaust but looking for something a bit louder, only problem is you don't know what it's properly like till you've got it fitted. And there soooo expensive, if you get it wrong it's an expensive mistake.

Especially as we go out as a family in ours from time to time.
