I've got to replace my rear boxees are they now have holes in them.. frown Not massively pleased that I have to do it so soon but I'm not too annoyed about it.

I had a drive in a friend's turbo on the weekend with the bypass pipes fitted and frankly it sounded awesome and I'm now seriously considering having them fitted, the tubby isn't a daily so my mate couldn't tell me what it's like to live with on a day to day basis so was wondering if anyone else has done it on anything other than an occaisional use car / garage queen?

I really don't mind loud, I've had a fair few cars that are a bit in your face previously some were OK others were horrible as a daily...

I had the popular Fister / Gundo whatever it's called exhaust hack done where they weld in a bypass pipe on my 98/99 996 C2 cab.

What I would say is don't stick too big a pipe on because it can end up sounding utterly ridiculous and droning in the cabin is unbearable on motorway journeys.

I think they put a 2" on mine, I asked for a 1.5 but they kept saying nah you dont want one of those as it will be piddly. I should really have noted they had a scooby parked in the garage with a massive exhaust on it and realised what they defined as being piddly.

Anyway to try and turn it around afterwards they tried sticking bafflers in to reduce the size of the pipe internally and the car just ended up sounding like it was blowing / farting along the road which was only marginally less embarassing.

In the end I stuck a Dansk sport exhaust on it but had to buy new exhaust tips as they drilled through those when doing the exhaust mod.

The Dansk was initially underwhelming compared to a PSE I had a couple of years previous but 20k miles later and its starting to sound pretty good.

Cheers, was looking at the Cup silencer delete as an option, could be a bit mental as you are essentially going straight out from the cats..

Theres a few videos on youtube of porkers with exhaust mods if youve not had a look already - gives you a little idea of what to expect to hear from the outside but obviously cant tell what its like inside on long journeys.

Seen a few of them, always really hard to tell what they actually sound like as audio quality varies wildly. As I'm doing relatively short trips in the car right now I may go with the loud option for now and if it annoys then I'll swap it out for something less aggressive.

The simplest way to work-out why you won't want these is to remove your knackered silencers then fire-up the engine without them. That's EXACTLY the sound noise you'll get with the bypass pipes. 'Sha**ed-out old tractor with big hole in the exhaust' comes to mind - truly horrible.

Thats a fair point, I showed my friend said modified exhaust and he also said it sounded like a tractor and awful.

Funny thing is though that when he floored it, after a certain point it did sound pretty good - just idle and low rev range it sounded bleeding awful, as well as the motorway drone.

After the bafflers got fitted though it just sounded st all through the rev range.

Ha, sounding like a tractor is far from ideal! Though I do love a good Massey Ferguson at times..
