GT3RS.2 vs. 458 Italia vs. Nissan GTr MY2011
Discussion
quite like the way they both (esp. Justin Bell) describes the differences ... everyday language and relating the experiences back to really important basic stuff like how it makes them feel and how confident they feel

Really enjoyed that!
Trying really hard to not want a Nissan GTR but to be in that company at that price...............

Pretty good review, sums up each car pretty well I think. I would say the 911 and 458 are really good drivers' cars, and the GTR is a really good car, but does not involve the driver in the same way as the others. It's not the usual bull that it drives itself, try one in the wet on a narrow road, and it will scare the life out of you. No, it's the fact that it will try to correct things before you will and you are left wondering what you are supposed to be doing.
The 458 is simply brilliant. Steering feel, damping, pace etc. It will get it's arse out a bit without scaring you too much. The 911 is also a great drivers' car, but not quite as confidence inspiring as the 458, and not as quick as the GTR or the 458.
Thanks for sharing.

A new contender is on the way. Corvette Stingray 2014. Like the GTR it will offer great performance at low cost. LHD only is a problem for some though.
Perhaps but the difference is that the engineering solutions on the Vette do not allow it to front up to the very best. The Z06 and ZR1 offer massive performance but they just do not compare dynamically. The GTR has superior engineering in many ways than even the Ferrari and Porsche , excellent build quality and it costs about the same as a regular Corvette (and quite a bit less than the ZR1)
And it's always been more than the sum of its parts from the astounding performance that is even better than it should be to the amazing chassis that allows it to post GT3 lap times on track (albeit for about 5 laps when its transmission and brake fluids get too hot !! )
Vette not in the same class in value for money for me.

I was very surprised to see, after reading your comment, what you have in your garage! The GTR has superior engineering in many ways than even the Ferrari and Porsche , excellent build quality and it costs about the same as a regular Corvette (and quite a bit less than the ZR1)

Lovely car, lovely colour combo!

The GTR is remarkable and , for me, a better car than a 911 Turbo but it can't quite match the highs as a drivers car for weekends, trips, track days that the GT3 can.
There's a level of feedback and interaction through the wheel and the seat of your pants that's unrivalled. And I love high revving N/A motors. It's not as fast as my GTR but it's plenty fast enough. It's also usefully smaller and more "chuckable" (Not sure that's a word)
Loving my present toy, it's as sweet a car as I've had I think.

In the main, I don't disagree with your comments. However I can take a stock Corvette and race it, but I can't do that with a stock GTR for the reasons you point out.Vette not in the same class in value for money for me.
In my experience, the Z06 is dynamically accomplished and good value for money.
A great watch and a nice mention about the Cayman R which gave a good run against the GT3 RS to get into the final 3 spots!
I also watched part 1 and 2 of the tests on youtube and to hear, from the racing driver who did the Leguna Seca tests, that the Cayman R is the best handling road car he's ever driven!
All 3 finalists are worthy winners in different ways but I guess if I was fortunate to have a choice it would be the 458 closely followed by GT3 RS and the GTR.
It surprised me that they guys mentioned that that the 458 had the best steering feel where as another test I've watched which I cant remember right now (could be Chris Harris comparison) mentioned that the 458's steering is not as communicative as the GT3 RS's?

The GTR boils it's tranny oil (although in truth I'm not sure that any other car monitors it's temps in the same way so some may well do the same) and cooks it's brakes but both can be fixed for modest sums if you want to and what it can also do is be easily tuned to outrageous outputs which it's chassis copes with effortlessly.
But the Z06 cost about the same as the GTR and whilst they're both great value at that price the GTR is ahead in all areas. IMHO the bargain of the decade.

Fair points.
Each to their own - I would rather have a Z06 than a GTR, but then I am old school. Which is why I also love the Mezger in a 996. Can't beat outdated tech!

My mate and me had these 2 at LeMans in 2011. Good chance to compare and contrast 2 quite different ways of going fast.
And fabulous as my GTR was I went back to GT3 (and especially mezger N/A 6s) in the end. For several reasons.
I think if I had the funds I would probably have one of each in the garage though.

The steering on the 458 is very good, but it's lighter and perhaps not quite as "grainy" as the GT3 RS. On a day to day basis, the 458's is easier to live with.Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
