Decisions, decisions…

My 2006 997.1 C4S is needing some attention to it's basalt black paintwork. I've had the car a couple of years now and it's high time the front end, bonnet and rear wheel arches were re-sprayed. I had some gulf stripes put on the car about a year ago and love them (not everyone's cup of tea but works for me) but some of the graphics lifted when clipped with a jet wash (doh!) frown

Does anyone have any experience of total resprays? Part of me (a large part) would love to get the car resprayed either Riviera Blue or potentially Guards red. How practical / expensive would this be given it's current colour?

The car is in good condition mechanically although has a higher than average mileage at 72,000 miles. Good spec: manual, full black leather, hard backed sports seats, PCM, sports chrono, switchable PSE, xenons, heated seats, sunroof etc. I know if I was to sell the car the only thing (apart from maybe mileage) that would put folks off would be the paintwork. I love driving it so have no real desire to change it.

So…

Option 1: full body respray: Riviera Blue > Guards Red > Basalt black: most expensive option - money down pan?
Option 2: partial respray basalt black metallic: possibly least expensive option - safe but boring?
Option 3: full vinyl wrap: could be great / could be a disaster?!
Option 4: punt car and spend difference on respray to change to next toy - works for man logic but better half may not see it that way!!!

I'm based up in Glasgow, so if anyone has any recommendations I'd be grateful!

Thanks in advance beer

Don't think I'd go down the full respray route, not on a car of that age as it may have an adverse effect on resale.

Cosmetic paint tends to be expected particularly on black cars to deal with stone chips etc, so that should be fine.

Tough one, but I think if you really have to have riveria blue (which is a very striking colour which is fantastic imo) I'd look to move the existing car on and then look for one in that colour, however I'm guessing you may need to look quite hard as I think it's a pretty rare colour.

I'm no expert but personally, wouldn't buy a used car if it had undergone a colour change (unless it was a Carrera GT and going for 200k off list wink)

Not a fan of wraps either (unless it's a fajita wrap).

Hence, I would rather go for the boring option of partial respray in order to maximise resale value and then get a new toy in your colour of choice.

Maybe not what you wanted to hear (so apologies for that) but is one PH'ers view anyway biggrin

If it only cost you £5000 to sell your car and buy an equivalent one in another colour then it's an absolute bargain compared to respraying yours.

Get it wrapped -you might want to see if it's possible to have graphics (e.g. stripes or script etc) applied on top of the vinyl and if they're ok to remove - that way you can change the look slightly every time you fancied it. A good wrap for £2000 will seem very good value to entirely transform the look of your car. smile

I would say that a quality wrap in riviera on top of your tatty paintwork would be the best option to get the colour you want.

Sometimes the original paintwork can be damaged on fitting and on removal of the wrap. This wouldn't matter too much with your car if its already due some tlc anyway.

You would still have your car that is mechanically good as you say and it would not have had a full colour change which as others say can put off future buyers.

So for around 2 k you would have a nice mechanically sound 997 in riviera blue.

Sounds good to me

Thanks for the replies so far! Looks like the full colour wrap is probably the most sensible option at this point...

I quite like Riviera Blue but one thing bothers me: Is it not an RS colour? And therefore shouldn't really be for non-RS cars?

I think I agree - I've seen it on non-RS/GT3 997's and it just doesn't look right. There was a C4S with aero kit recently in Riviera, and also a Turbo cab, both of which just looked wrong in that colour. The Gen 2 997 GT3 at Mid-Sussex however.... Stunning... Don't know why, must be the spoilers / wings / lowered stance that allow the GT cars pull the colour off...

Have to agree the GT3 is stunning but a few grand out of my price range… Worst case, if it looks awful I'll live with it for a while then take the wrap off biggrin

There is a pic of a riviera blue 997 (not a gt3) half way down this page.

That does look great.

Just shows it does suit a non gt 997 smile
