I'd check I was buying from an OPC to be honest. That or a private buy and transfer the warranty.

All the normal 911 stuff applies, like rads and condensers. How you can judge whether the turbos at fine I don't know and they are a few grand to replace.

I'd just be checking all the usual things which indicate how it's been looked after like, state of the bodywork, windscreen, wheels, interior, service history, receipts, warranty etc.

If all this checks out...

Then check for cracks in the brake discs.....they start to radiate from the drill holes when getting on a bit.
Check the front rads very carefully....major weak spot (check coolant level and for smell of coolant at front also).
Tyres....especially inside edges of the rears.
Any funny engine noises or belt noises ?? Mezger does rattle a bit on tick-over, anything else is not normal (I can assure you wink)
Over-revs in range 4 or above....not sure how you going to check this one ??
Continued smoking on start up (a bit is normal sometimes).

Then, does it go like a scolded cat....if so, it's probably ok biggrin

Equipment wise, sports chrono & adaptive sports seats. Anything else is a bonus !

I bought mine 4 years ago from an OPC at 16k miles (now done 30k). Has been a brilliant car but has still been fairly costly to run (tyres, brakes / discs & warranty / servicing being major costs). Personally, I'm really glad I kept extending the warranty as mine has had :-

- coolant leak from join in pipe which runs under the car
- 2 rads replaced (one centre and one main)
- new starter motor
- new AC compressor
- replacement of TPM sensor in rear wheel
- hours and hours spent in the workshop recently resolving Lada Reva noise (thankfully, now finally sorted)

Hope this hasn't put you off !!

Very true, however I guess you still only get what you pay for. They are knocking on a bit now (getting older) so buy wisely !

The 997 Turbo is just a used car so you have to suspect everything's wrong, nothing works and then check the car out enough to satisfy yourself you know what works.

Be sure to visit the car cold, listen to the engine start and idle until nearly warm. Warm enough that you can check the oil pressure to ensure you hear nothing scary from the engine. Be sure the CEL comes at key on time and goes off as soon as the engine starts.

The have the seller take you for a 15 mile (at least) test ride and you pay very close attention to the car, how it feels, sounds, runs, etc.

The route should allow the driver to demo the car in a variety of types of driving.

Back at the starting point take the car out this time as the driver and follow the same route, drive the car the same way.

Back at the starting point the 2nd time then you give the car a thorough check out. From lights to horn. From glove box latch to headlight washers.

If you still like the car and believe you can make a deal arrange for a PPI.

If the car makes it through with flying colors buy the car.

Right the car belongs to a freind who brought it in september from a garage and now could do with freeing up the money, I can have it if I match his best trade bid.

It's meteor grey with coco leather, manual and 48k miles. I'm not sure of the exact spec but I'm pretty sure it has sport chrono, quite a bit of extra leather trim, crested seats etc.

For me warranty is a must. Also remember Porsche are getting difficult on the 'over rev' issue when issuing / renewing warrnties so worth getting an inspection from an OPC pre purchase if you can.

So if its a friend, you can have a test drive of your choice, see the car hot and cold, and get your hands on the history.

Do you know which garage he bought it from? If its one of the known specialists, you're probably onto a winner if you can get it for Trade.

My car is a manual in Meteor smile Good Luck.

Mine's been a brilliant car too, but had none of these problems!

There's no way 99% of Porsche Turbo sellers would allow a punter to drive their car for 0.1 mile let alone 15 miles. Insurance is an issue, in fact I don't know of one insurer who will cover a test drive for a potential buyer with fully comprehensive cover. Sure, I'm covered to drive any insured vehicle on a third party basis, but any seller with some nonce wouldn't allow this, I certainly wouldn't!

Have it checked by a professional who carries out pre purchase inspections, that way you don't fall out with a friend . Do not use PH as a guide to buying a Porsche.

I have owned a 997Turbo for nearly seven years and would not advice anyone on buying a car ( mine has been absolutely fantastic) and has cost very little to run and maintain considering what the car offers. driving

A good starting point would be where your friend bought their car from. If it was an Official Porsche Dealer (OPC), then you'll have the balance of the 2 year warranty still remaining transferred to you.
If it was a specialist Porsche garage, then you should still be ok, as most won't take in tat to start with.

The best piece of advice however, has already been given, get an independent inspection. If it came from an OPC, you could take it to them for an inspection as an option.

Sounds nice though - love Coco, and Meteor Grey is quite a rare Turbo colour I think.
Good luck smile
