My first Boxster, 986S - showing off to my lad and left it in second too long shifting up from a junction and hit the red! Had my first hard cut-out fright but then was stuck idling at 1000 odd rpm and could not power up. Thinking I'd knackered something I pulled over and turned the engine off and then restarted without issue and drove home without leaving my engine in the road! Is this normal, having to restart after the rev limiter kicks in after a hard stop?

There should be no problem hitting the limiter, it's doing its job.

Just to be clear you were accelerating in a gear when it hit the limiter? This is perfectly fine.

Thanks. Yes, accelerating up, not shifting down. The problem was after the cut-out, where the engine was seemingly stuck at 1000 rpms regardless of how much throttle I gave it. As soon as I turned the egnine off and then re-started, every was normal....

It sounds like it went into some sort of safe mode and switching it off reset it. I have not heard of this before on a box.

I'm guessing modern Porsche do it also. Sounds like its gone into safe mode.
Jags, nissans etc etc ive been a passenger in and the drivers hit the limiter changing up and bam, cars won't then rev for a while.
The Nissan did it on an overtake and wouldn't rev again until it was restarted, that was a bit scary.

Remember it happened to clarkson on the Ring in a jag a few years back. He gave it too much and the car flicked into safe mode for a while.

Doesn't sound at all safe to me.

I'd get it looked at.

Something's clearly wrong here - normal operation of the rev limiter should never put the car into 'won't work' mode (whateve's going on, it's not 'safe' as SS7 says). There's clearly another issue with your car that you should get sorted ASAP.

If the car's operating correctly, you can hit the rev limiter on every upshift without any ill effects at all - that's what it's there for. Not that I'd advocate such behaviour, of course! biggrin

Agreed, not the norm. Did you mash the pedal down? Perhaps the pedal electrics (potentiometer) went duff. Pure speculation of course.
