997.1 Reverse Lights Stay On

Hi PH'ers.
Merrily driving along this evening and other people are flashing their lights at me... after a few flashes I cotton on to the idea something's up with the car. Well it's not a puncture so I think 'lights' and when I pull over indeed the reversing lights are on, gearbox in neutral. Pop it into reverse and back into neutral again and they turn off... hmmm.
It's a 55 plate 997.1 manual - doesn't seem wet inside anywhere. Not sure if it's a known thing to die eventually, or a relay/switch etc or perhaps the sign of magic electrical gremlins developing... it's just been for a service too :-(
Any insight gratefully received whilst I peruse the manual.
